Class Description
Parenting teens can be difficult, but it doesn't have to be nearly as difficult as we're making it. It's all in our approach. Most parents focus on their teen's BEHAVIORS- snarky attitude, disrespect, laziness, emotional blow ups and meltdowns. But no matter what they do to try to stop them, they keep coming back. It's like an endless game of whack-a-mole. That's because they're focusing on the WRONG THING. Over the past 2 decades working with teens, I've uncovered 4 key reasons they act out. This course teaches you what those reasons are, what behaviors they trigger, and how you can best resolve those problems--even PREVENT them from popping up in the first place. Imagine how amazing it'll be when you can CONFIDENTLY and CALMLY address whatever crises and behavior your teen throws your way. All it takes is deeper understanding and research-based strategies and techniques. You'll get it all in this course.

Sessions Overview
- 4 Key Reasons Teens Break Down Intro: In this brief intro session, Dr. Cam provides an overview of what to expect from the course and how to get the most out of it.
- Weak Brakes: If your teen is pushing back, acting out, or melting down, the problem could be with their braking system. In this session, Dr. Cam explains basic adolescent brain development, how it impacts their behavior and decision-making, and provides tips for how parents can work WITH their teen's wiring.
- Empty Tank: Some warning signs that your teen may have an empty tank are anger, resentment, lying, defensiveness, withdrawal, self-pity, and emotional break downs. In this session, Dr. Cam walks through tank drainers, tank fillers, and how to help a teen that's running on empty.
- Low Battery: If you're teen is stressed, overwhelmed, unmotivated, or irresponsible, it may be due to a low battery. In this session, Dr. Cam explains what truly energizes and motivates teens and how to help your teen develop more resiliency and become more cooperative.
- Unclear Directions: Bad attitude? Constant power struggles? Resistence to trying? Trying too hard? All of these are signs that your teen is at the mercy of poor directions. In this session, Dr. Cam dives into one of the biggest causes of conflict between parents and teens: miscommunication.
Your Instructor
Cameron (Dr. Cam) Caswell, PhD, the “teen translator,” is an adolescent psychologist and family success coach who specializes in helping parents build strong, positive relationships with their teens through improved communication, connection, and understanding using her PRIME Parenting Method. Since publishing her book, Power Phrases for Parents: Teen Edition, in 2015, Dr. Cam has been speaking about adolescent development and parent education at local schools, national organizations, on television, podcasts, and most recently on NPR. After her presentation at the Nysmith School, the coordinator wrote, “The best Parent Education event the school has ever had.” Dr. Cam hosts the Parenting Teens with Dr. Cam podcast and Parenting Teens Power Hour. She’s also created a series of online parenting courses including, “3 Secrets to Connecting with Your Teen.” and “How to Calm the Teen Drama.” Dr. Cam uses her fun, interactive style to unpack frustrating adolescent behavior and empowers her clients and audiences to work with their teen's wiring rather than against it—boosting the development of a positive, healthy sense of self rather than unwittingly eroding it. Parents leave her sessions feeling hopeful, supported, and motivated for change. Dr. Cam is the mom of a teen too, so she not only talks the talk, she walks the walk!
