Meltdowns: How to approach your child when they're having a moment

On-Demand Class · Emotions & Behavior

All children have "a moment" from time to time: frustration, anger, worry, stress, anxiety. This class explores how we can bring our best selves to this moment and help our child as quickly and effectively as possible.

Class Description

All children - and adults - have "a moment" from time to time, when they become frustrated, angry, worried, stressed or anxious. As a parent our instinct is to rush in and fix whatever is happening. Emotions are tricky things though. What may appear as anger could well be worry deep down. So we sometimes need to play detective to figure out what's really going on. The same, however, can be said for us as parents. Our concern may come out as anger, or in our rush to help we may bring to the moment all the stress, frustrations and exhaustion going on in our lives. So, this session explores how we can bring our best selves to the "moment". We'll explore 3 areas: State: The physical and mental state we bring to the moment. Environment: The impact the environment has on fuelling or calming the moment. Interaction: How we can approach and interact with our children to reach a calm outcome quickly. You'll notice that the first two areas are before you even interact with your child ... and this is so important because we can easily, unknowingly and regrettably add fuel to the moment if we're not careful. With a little awareness though we can summon our best selves and help our children calmer, quicker and with less guilt about what we should or shouldn't have done. Enjoy this session, get value from it and I wish you well in navigating the exciting, rewarding and emotional journey that is being a parent.
