Class Description
Most new nursing parents are surprised by all the physical changes that occur in their breasts within the first few postpartum days. Learning what to expect can help you prevent more serious problems from occuring and enable you to have a more pleasant breastfeeding experience. Erin decribes 7 of the most common breast/lactation issues that experienced nursing moms said they wish they had known more about before baby came. She also explains how to navigate each problem, when to seek help from a lactation specialist, and how each problem can exacerbate others if not treated properly. Through 7 mini-lessons, you will learn about breast discomfort vs. pain signaling a problem, leaking breasts, managing the letdown, sore nipples, engorgement, clogged ducts, and mastitis. If you are pregnant, learning about these topics will help you be a more informed new parent. And if you are currently a nursing parent struggling with these issues, this course will help give you easy ways to improve your discomfort.

Your Instructor
Erin is a mom of two children with very different nursing experiences. Her daughter breastfed for 4 1/2 years, while her son weaned at 4 months! She then transitioned to exclusive pumping and supplementing for his feeding needs. Erin became a Certified Lactation Educator through Cal State Northridge to help teach new parents prepare for breastfeeding. Combining her personal experience and lactation education with her 13 years as a communication studies college instructor, Erin now offers on-demand courses on BabySparks to help parents at specific points in their nursing/chestfeeding/pumping journeys to learn what they don't know they need to know about breastfeeding. Erin has an M.A. in Communication Studies from Cal State Long Beach and an M.S. in Heath Communication from Chapman University. Erin's primary area of study is the intersection of family and health communication, and breastfeeding is a perfect combination of the two!
