When children feel confident in themselves, they\u2019re proud of who they are, more accepting of their mistakes, and know they\u2019re loved and valued. Self-confidence doesn\u2019t only affect how we see ourselves, but also how we see the world. Confidence helps us stay inspired, hopeful, and gives us the strength to tackle life\u2019s challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Some believe that building self-confidence is something to focus on with older, school-age children. They may feel that toddlers don\u2019t need to worry about self-confidence because they\u2019re not constantly comparing themselves to peers, dealing with major failures, or losing sleep over flaws or shortcomings. However, the actions we take now can determine how our children feel about themselves later on in life. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to include confidence-building measures into a toddler\u2019s daily life.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><em><strong>Highlights:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Self-confidence is a powerful trait, and you can start building it in your little one today by:\n<ul>\n<li>Focusing on challenging\u00a0<em>behaviors<\/em>, rather than attributing challenges to the child. For example, instead of saying:\u00a0<em>Sara is shy<\/em>, try:\u00a0<em>Sara is feeling shy right now.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Offer praise for accomplishments, and be specific:\u00a0<em>Wow, you helped pick up your toys by putting them back in their bins. Thank you!<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Build on your child&#8217;s strengths by encouraging their interests.<\/li>\n<li>Take time to answer their questions (even though the famous toddler &#8220;whys&#8221; can feel delightfully exasperating sometimes!).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Here are a few tips to help your little one build self-confidence!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shift Your Words \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Toddlers may not understand everything we say, but if we say something often enough, it sinks in. This is especially true when children know adults are talking about them. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tinabryson.com\/#home-page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Dr. Tina Payne Bryson<\/strong><\/a>, psychotherapist and co-author of <em>The Whole-Brain Child<\/em>, explains that we need to be careful with the words we choose to describe our children. The key is to focus on what is happening with the child, rather than the child him or herself. For instance, if a toddler has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysparks.com\/2019\/03\/12\/supporting-a-child-with-a-slow-to-warm-up-temperament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>slow-to-warm-up temperament<\/strong><\/a>, instead of saying: \u201cSara is shy,\u201d try: \u201cSara is <em>feeling<\/em> shy right now.\u201d This simple shift can help a child understand that what they are experiencing can change, and is not a defining characteristic of who they are.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recognize Their Contributions and Accomplishments <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important for toddlers to know when they\u2019re being helpful and when they\u2019ve accomplished something. When we show them appreciation, they feel valued, which boosts self-esteem and self-worth. Remember to applaud them for picking up toys or putting their socks on by themselves. Be sure to be specific with your praise! Instead of just saying: \u201cWow, you cleaned up your room!\u201d Try: \u201cWow, you put your toys in the toy box <em>and<\/em> you put your shoes in the closet! Thank you!\u201d Being specific helps to emphasize their efforts, which in turn builds confidence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Encourage Their Interests <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A big part of building self-confidence is discovering our strengths. This can be a bit difficult with toddlers because they love<em> everything<\/em>! Running, jumping, dancing, drawing, and singing\u2026it\u2019s all fun for a 2-year old. But when they exhibit a significant interest in something, give it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysparks.com\/2020\/01\/27\/how-to-nurture-your-childs-curiosity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>special attention<\/strong><\/a>. For instance, if a child is smitten with the family dog, read books about dogs, teach them how to give the dog simple commands, or ask them to help brush the dog after a bath. In this example, the encouragement helps them feel like an \u201cexpert\u201d when it comes to dogs. And who knows, you may have a tiny veterinarian on your hands!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Help Them Make Sense of the World <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As your toddler develops language and communication skills, you\u2019ll start to hear <a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysparks.com\/2020\/01\/27\/why-your-toddler-asks-why-all-the-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>\u201cwhy?\u201d<\/strong><\/a> a lot more. While their constant questions will be delightfully frustrating on some days, it\u2019s still important to respond to them and explain how the world works. When we take the time to answer their questions, we\u2019re not only showing them love (which builds confidence), we\u2019re also helping them understand their realities. Learning about all the weird and wonderful things in their lives provides a sense of security and safety, which are foundations of self-confidence.<\/p>\n<p>Remember that completing activities together can also build a toddler\u2019s self-confidence.
