However, this window of intense sun can also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysparks.com\/2020\/06\/29\/the-downsides-of-sun-exposure-for-babies-and-toddlers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>cause harm to your little one\u2019s still-maturing skin<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Avoiding the sun during the middle of the day is the best way to prevent exposure that can damage baby and toddler skin (and potentially lead to skin cancer later in life). When you are outside, covering your child\u2019s skin in lightweight clothing is a great way to protect them. For any exposed skin, the next step is applying sunscreen.<\/p>\n<p>With so many types of sunscreen available, how do you know which one is right for your child?<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><em><strong>Highlights:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sunscreen is an important step in protecting your child&#8217;s skin from too much sun, but with so many choices how do you know which products are best?<\/li>\n<li>Asking your pediatrician is a great place to start!<\/li>\n<li>When it comes to SPF, 15-50 is recommended.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid the ingredient oxybenzone, which may disrupt hormones.<\/li>\n<li>Look for the label &#8220;broad spectrum,&#8221; which offers the most protection.<\/li>\n<li>For babies, apply small amounts to areas not covered by clothing. For toddlers, you can apply it more liberally.<\/li>\n<li>Apply 15-30 minutes before sun exposure, and reapply frequently &#8211; especially if your child is in the water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Here\u2019s what you need to know:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1: Talk with your pediatrician.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Learn about the best sunscreen options for your little one from your pediatrician, who can offer recommendations based on medical history. If your child has skin sensitivities or allergies, or is taking any medications, your pediatrician may suggest a specific type of sunscreen to avoid potential side effects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2: Understand SPF.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>SPF stands for \u201cSun Protection Factor.\u201d It measures the length of time sunscreen should offer sun protection. The higher the SPF number, the longer the shield, although this isn\u2019t an exact science.<\/p>\n<p>Babies and toddlers should use a sunscreen with at least 15 SPF, although you can go up to 50 SPF. For babies with sensitive skin, your pediatrician might recommend a sunscreen formulated for sensitive skin.<\/p>\n<p>High SPF sunscreen won\u2019t necessarily keep your child safe in the sun all day. Even the best sunscreen doesn\u2019t protect against all the sun\u2019s rays, so it\u2019s crucial to keep your baby covered up as much as possible and reapply sunscreen every one to two hours.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3: Know what to look for and avoid.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most sunscreen products are tested for safety, but it\u2019s still a good idea to know what you\u2019re getting in each bottle. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends avoiding sunscreen with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/safety-prevention\/at-play\/Pages\/Sun-Safety.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>oxybenzone<\/strong><\/a>, a chemical that may affect hormone levels. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) also notes that a preservative called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/sunscreen\/report\/the-trouble-with-sunscreen-chemicals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>methylisothiazolinone<\/strong><\/a> may be harmful to those with skin sensitivities or allergies.<\/p>\n<p>What you <em>do<\/em> want to find is the label \u201cbroad-spectrum\u201d somewhere on the bottle. Broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/risk-factors\/uv-radiation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>UVA and UVB rays<\/strong><\/a>, which are different types of radiation from the sun that damage the skin.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 4: Learn how to apply it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For babies, use just a small amount of sunscreen on their face, ears, hands, and other areas not covered by clothing. You can be more liberal with your toddler\u2019s sunscreen, but be careful around the mouth and eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before heading outside. Then, remember to frequently reapply, especially if your little one goes swimming, plays at a water table, or sweats.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 5: Look for signs of irritation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Irritation from sunscreen can happen to anyone, but immature skin makes babies and toddlers more vulnerable to adverse side effects. Some warning signs to look for after wearing sunscreen include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Red or blotchy skin<\/li>\n<li>Itchy skin<\/li>\n<li>Blistering skin<\/li>\n<li>A stinging or burning feeling<\/li>\n<li>Painful skin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your baby or toddler may not be able to tell you if they\u2019re feeling pain, so watch for signs of discomfort, such as extreme irritability or excessive crying.
