Turns out, one of those elements is\u2026dad! <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2017\/05\/170509083936.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A study<\/a> found that fathers who are highly involved during the first few months of their child\u2019s life can make a major impact on their baby\u2019s cognitive development.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><em><strong>Highlights:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Research from universities in England found that little ones with deeply-involved fathers scored higher on cognitive tests.<\/li>\n<li>Dads being positive and calm was also linked to better cognitive skills.<\/li>\n<li>Takeaways from the study:\n<ul>\n<li>It&#8217;s important for dads to be involved, starting in babyhood<\/li>\n<li>Dads can be involved by spending even brief periods playing with baby every day, participating in daily routines like bath and bedtime, talking to baby often, and being mindful to connect in positive, calm ways.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2>Summary of the Study<\/h2>\n<p>King\u2019s College London and Oxford University researchers wanted to find out what would happen to a baby\u2019s cognitive growth when dad was involved and engaged, specifically during the first few months of life. The study included 128 dads and their 3-month-old babies. The researchers recorded and studied a series of videos of the fathers playing (without toys) with their 3-month-old babies. They brought the participants back in to assess the child\u2019s cognitive abilities at age 24 months.<\/p>\n<p>Using a standardized mental developmental test (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/medicine-and-dentistry\/bayley-scales-of-infant-development\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bayley\u2019s Scale<\/a>) the researchers gave the 2-year-olds scores based on various tasks, such as identifying colors and shapes. Results showed a positive correlation between fathers with a deep degree of involvement and their children\u2019s high scores. Results also showed that dads who had positive outlooks on life were more likely to have children that scored well. In addition, the scoring showed no difference between boys or girls, squashing the old idea that boys benefit from a father\u2019s engagement more than girls do.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Vaheshta Sethna, from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology &amp; Neuroscience at King&#8217;s College London, explained that the study also showed that \u201cchildren interacting with sensitive, calm, and less anxious fathers during a book session at the age of 2 showed better cognitive development, including attention, problem-solving, language and social skills.\u201d This points to how powerful a father\u2019s influence can be when he\u2019s not only actively involved but also using positive words and emotions with his child during the infancy stage.<\/p>\n<h2>Takeaways from the Study<\/h2>\n<p>The message is clear! Dads who embrace fatherhood and become actively involved, specifically during the first few months of life, are providing significant developmental benefits to their young children. The results of this study:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Highlight the positive impact active dads have on cognitive functioning.<\/li>\n<li>Present the importance of dads expressing positive outlooks, sensitivity, calmness, patience, and compassion with their children.<\/li>\n<li>Show that both boys and girls equally receive these cognitive benefits from dad.<\/li>\n<li>Emphasize the vital role dads play in the infancy stage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That last bullet point is particularly important, because it challenges conventional ideas of the family dynamic. Traditionally, it wasn\u2019t uncommon for fathers to step back during infancy, while mothers took the wheel. But studies like these explore a different approach.
