They\u2019re not only learning to communicate, but also to listen more and observe the world around them.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, toddlers develop speech and language skills at different paces, so it shouldn\u2019t be a cause for concern if some of your little one&#8217;s peers seem a bit more advanced. That said, it&#8217;s still important for parents and caregivers to be aware of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysparks.com\/2019\/08\/08\/common-speech-and-language-disorders-how-to-spot-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">speech-related red flags<\/a>.<\/strong> Some for this age range are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Does not use unique two-word phrases, including noun-verb combinations<\/li>\n<li>Does not verbally respond or nod\/shake head to questions<\/li>\n<li>Has regressed or lost previously acquired speech\/language skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s important to consult with your pediatrician or a pediatric speech-language pathologist if you\u2019re concerned about your child\u2019s speech development.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b><i>Highlights:\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children develop speech and language skills at different paces. In fact, he might start using words you didn\u2019t even realize he knew! That\u2019s because he\u2019ll pick up on words and phrases that he hears adults use, and find a way to use them himself. He\u2019ll be able to actively listen to conversations for about 3-6 minutes, so this is a great time to take advantage of small talk to give his speech and social skills a boost. Toddlers at this age can answer simple <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysparks.com\/2020\/04\/03\/why-use-wh-questions-with-your-toddler\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u2018what\u2019 and \u2018where\u2019 questions<\/a>,<\/strong> and even respond to questions like, \u201cHow old are you?\u201d or \u201cWhat\u2019s your doggie\u2019s name?\u201d He\u2019ll show off his early literacy skills, too, by describing characters from his favorite <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysparks.com\/2019\/02\/15\/benefits-of-reading-to-your-toddler\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">book<\/a>,<\/strong> or answering questions about the storyline.<\/p>\n<h2>28-30 Months<\/h2>\n<p>At this time, you\u2019ll begin to see how receptive your little one has become! He might start to pick up on context clues when listening to others. For instance, if he hears you say: \u201cWhere are my keys,\u201d he may jump up and help you look for them. He\u2019ll continue to master answering \u2018what\u2019 and \u2018where\u2019 questions, but now he\u2019ll move on to <em>asking<\/em> \u2018what\u2019 and \u2018where\u2019 questions of his own. As he engages in more conversations, you\u2019ll notice his conversational skills improve. For instance, he may join a conversation in progress with a relevant question or statement. Overall, there will be a noticeable increase in his eagerness to verbally interact.<\/p>\n<h2>31-33 Months<\/h2>\n<p>Throughout months 31-33, your toddler will start using attention-grabbing words like \u201cHey!\u201d or \u201cLook!\u201d when he sees something exciting that he wants to share. Toddlers at this age are also famous for keeping you in a conversation by simply repeating what you just said. He\u2019ll be able to describe actions or objects with more clarity, and start telling stories with themes. There may not be a clear plot to his story, but the descriptive words are starting to sink in. You\u2019ll also hear him combining noun and verb phrases together (\u201cI eat big cookie!\u201d) which will gradually lead to longer sentences. He\u2019ll ask simple \u2018who,\u2019 \u2018when,\u2019 and \u2018how\u2019 questions and answer simple \u2018why\u2019 questions. Even though his vocabulary is expanding at this time, he\u2019ll still misarticulate some words (say \u201cbue\u201d instead of \u201cblue,\u201d or \u201cdu\u201d instead of \u201cduck,\u201d for example).<\/p>\n<h2>34-36 Months<\/h2>\n<p>Throughout these months, your toddler will become quite the wordsmith and he\u2019ll be <em>very <\/em>excited about that! He\u2019ll be eager to use his new words, play word or alphabet games, and ask a lot of questions. He\u2019ll start to pronounce <em>f, s, <\/em>and <em>y<\/em> more clearly. Shorter word versions will also start to disappear (saying \u201cumbrella\u201d instead of \u201cbrella\u201d). As the concept of time is slowly starting to form, he\u2019ll begin to incorporate the past tense into conversations and even refer to acts happening in the future (talk about going to see grandma tomorrow). One of the most thrilling parts of this phase is that others will be able to understand about 75% of what he\u2019s saying!
