This starts with basic movements like grasping and exploring a block, and builds to arranging blocks to make simple structures. During each stage, he\u2019s fine-tuning his motor, cognitive, language, and social skills.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b><i>Highlights:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As children grow, they can play with blocks in increasingly sophisticated ways. Here\u2019s how block play evolves for babies and toddlers:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>0-12 Months<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Between 2-3 months, you can place a block into a baby\u2019s hand and they\u2019ll move their hand around to look at it from all directions. By 10 months, they can pick a block up on their own using the pincer grasp.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>13-24 Months<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Toddlers experiment with blocks by tossing them around or filling up and dumping containers with blocks. By 21 months, toddlers can stack blocks to build towers. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>25-36 Months<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Around 25 months, toddlers use symbolic problem solving to figure out different ways to use blocks. They might use other materials, such as sticks, to build structures.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check out all the different block activities in the BabySparks program!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Here\u2019s how block play evolves for babies and toddlers:<\/p>\n<h2>0-12 Months<\/h2>\n<p>Your infant will begin learning how to grasp and hold onto blocks around the 2-month mark. Right now, if you placed a block firmly in his hand, he\u2019ll grasp onto it. He\u2019ll probably also move his arm and hand around to look at the block from all directions. This seemingly simple step is actually doing a lot: He\u2019s interacting with the block in his own way and forming an interest in it! By 3 months, he may try to put the blocks you give him in his mouth, so make sure they\u2019re large blocks with no small or sharp pieces.<\/p>\n<p>By 7 months, your baby may use a raking motion with his hands to bring blocks on the floor closer to him, but it will be closer to 10 months before he can pick up blocks on his own with more control using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysparks.com\/2020\/03\/03\/the-evolution-of-grasping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>pincer grasp<\/strong><\/a>. Also at the 10-month mark, he may study blocks a little closer to learn about their properties. You may find him banging blocks together to hear their noise or running his fingers along the tops to feel their bumps.<\/p>\n<h2>13-24 Months<\/h2>\n<p>During your toddler\u2019s second year, you\u2019ll see him become more interactive with blocks. He may carry them around as he\u2019s learning to walk, toss them, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysparks.com\/2019\/10\/28\/how-dumping-and-filling-up-containers-helps-your-child-learn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>fill up and dump out containers with them<\/strong><\/a>. These acts are the building blocks of experimenting, which targets his cognitive skills, including problem-solving, early math, early science, and attention.<\/p>\n<p>Your toddler will spend most of his time with blocks thinking: \u201cWhat if\u2026?\u201d and \u201cWhy?\u201d For example, he might try to put two different types of blocks together and wonder why they don\u2019t fit. Offer him a variety of blocks and let his curiosity guide him as he explores.<\/p>\n<p>By 18 months, he can build towers of three to four blocks and may begin to use them more purposely, like building a \u201cgarage\u201d for his toy cars. By 21 months, his towers will grow to six blocks, and by 23 months, he may have enough control in his fingers to manipulate smaller blocks.<\/p>\n<h2>25-36 Months<\/h2>\n<p>Your now 2-year-old is ready to start building upon everything he\u2019s learned so far with blocks. Around 25 months, he\u2019ll begin to use symbolic problem solving to figure out different ways to use blocks. For example, he might continue to move blocks around and piece them together until he learns to make a square. He might also start to experiment with using other materials to build, like sticks or stacking cubes. By 27 months, your toddler will probably be able to build block towers with six or more blocks.<\/p>\n<p>Around the 28-month mark, he\u2019ll work with simple structures, like cars and houses, building them in a way that\u2019s recognizable to you. They may only contain a few blocks, but the basics will be there. He\u2019ll also be able to take apart his structures to rebuild them into the same object or something new.<\/p>\n<p>Blocks are oh-so-fun for babies and toddlers of all ages and stages.
