Let\u2019s talk about the whys of catching, and how it develops.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b><i>Highlights:\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catching a ball is an important milestone because it supports a wide range of skills, including:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hand-eye coordination<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proprioceptive sense\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dominant hand development\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spatial skills<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Problem-solving<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fitness and health<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most toddlers start \u201ccatching\u201d a ball as you roll it on the floor, which helps them learn to visually track the ball.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around age 30 months, they\u2019re able to hold out their arms and catch a ball lightly tossed from a few feet away.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The BabySparks program has tons of catching activities for each stage of development!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2>Why Is Catching Important?<\/h2>\n<p>Learning to catch a ball targets a wide range of skills, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysparks.com\/2019\/05\/14\/hand-eye-coordination-how-the-eyes-brain-and-hands-work-together\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hand-eye coordination<\/a>:<\/strong> Your toddler learns to move her hands and arms to where she tracks a ball with her eyes, helping her to coordinate these movements together.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bilateral coordination:<\/strong> Bilateral coordination means syncing both sides of the body to work together. As your toddler reaches and runs to catch a ball, she works on improving this skill. Her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysparks.com\/2019\/02\/22\/your-babys-proprioceptive-sense\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>proprioceptive sense<\/strong><\/a> is also hard at work, as it tells her brain how to move her body parts.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysparks.com\/2019\/03\/19\/developing-a-dominant-hand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Developing a dominant hand<\/a>:<\/strong> Your toddler may not show a preference for a dominant hand until around age four, but she\u2019ll do the important work of developing one throughout toddlerhood. Over time, catching helps one hand become the \u201cworker,\u201d and the other hand become the \u201chelper.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spatial skills:<\/strong> Around 18 months, your toddler has a good understanding of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysparks.com\/2019\/02\/20\/what-is-spatial-awareness-how-does-it-develop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>spatial awareness<\/strong><\/a>, which includes knowing where her body is compared to other objects and people. Catching further hones this skill as she judges the ball\u2019s distance and how to position her body to catch it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Problem-solving:<\/strong> When a ball comes toward your toddler, she has to think about how to move and position her body to catch it. Trial and error put her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysparks.com\/2018\/02\/23\/the-evolution-of-problem-solving\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>problem solving abilities<\/strong><\/a> to work!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fitness:<\/strong> Catching is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysparks.com\/2018\/03\/16\/running-jumping-throwing-keys-to-lifelong-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>fundamental movement skill<\/strong><\/a> that is linked to lifelong fitness and health!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How Does Catching Develop?<\/h2>\n<p>Catching tends to take longer to develop than <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysparks.com\/2018\/03\/02\/throwing-a-fundamental-movement-skill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">throwing<\/a>,<\/strong> because it requires more coordination of the arms, legs, and eyes. Although throwing usually begins around the one-year mark, catching may not happen (without falling over) until closer to age three.<\/p>\n<p>Most toddlers start \u201ccatching\u201d a ball as you roll it on the floor (as opposed to tossing it in the air). This gets her arms and hands moving and helps her learn to visually track the ball.<\/p>\n<p>Your toddler may be able to start learning to catch an airborne ball around age 18 months. She\u2019ll probably feel a bit more steady catching a ball while sitting. You may notice her clumsily swatting her hands together to try to grab the ball, until she learns to use her hands and fingers to get a better grip.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout months 24-36, your toddler\u2019s catching skills will improve along with her other gross motor skills, like throwing, running, and turning, as she learns to remain balanced while making different movements. Around age 30 months, she may be able to hold out her arms and catch a ball you toss from a couple of feet away. By her 3<sup>rd<\/sup> birthday, she may be able to catch a ball tossed from four or five feet away.<\/p>\n<p>Working on catching skills is a fun way to keep your toddler moving.
