We\u2019re not talking about just any questions either, we\u2019re talking about wh- questions! Wh- questions ask <em>What, Who, Why, Where, When<\/em>, and <em>How<\/em>. Wh- questions are more complex than simple yes or no questions, which is why they\u2019re such an exciting milestone for young inquisitive minds.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b><i>Highlights:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toddlers answering wh- questions is an exciting milestone because they\u2019re more complex than simple yes or no answers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wh- questions are important because they build conversation skills, boost social skills, stimulate vocabulary, promote critical thinking skills, and demonstrate a toddler&#8217;s understanding of something new.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a 2016 study, researchers found that toddlers who were asked more wh- questions had a stronger vocabulary and better verbal reasoning skills.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between 24-36 months, \u2018what\u2019 questions will be easiest for toddlers to answer, followed by \u2018where\u2019 and \u2018who\u2019 questions. Learning to ask and answer wh- questions helps toddlers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Build conversation skills<\/li>\n<li>Boost social skills<\/li>\n<li>Stimulate vocabulary development<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate an understanding of something new<\/li>\n<li>Promote reasoning, critical thinking, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysparks.com\/2018\/02\/23\/the-evolution-of-problem-solving\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>problem-solving<\/strong><\/a> skills<\/li>\n<li>Learn how to follow directions<\/li>\n<li>Relay information to others<\/li>\n<li>Build relationships<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As you can see, this list of benefits ranges from social skills to critical thinking. Wh- questions lay the groundwork for making new friends, preparing for preschool, and of course, learning fun stuff!<\/p>\n<h2>How Wh- Questions Impact a Toddler\u2019s Development<\/h2>\n<p>This 2016 <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1111\/cogs.12349\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>study<\/strong><\/a> found some inspiring conclusions about the impact of wh- questions on a toddler\u2019s development. Researchers asked fathers (Family Fun Fact: statistically, fathers are more likely to ask wh- questions than moms, which is why they were chosen for this experiment) to play, read, and ask their toddler questions for 10-minutes. Afterward, the researchers analyzed the types of questions asked (wh- questions or yes\/no questions) and the toddlers\u2019 answers. The results showed that fathers who asked wh- questions received more complex verbal responses, rather than their toddler simply pointing to an answer or responding yes\/no. In addition, when the toddlers were brought back in a year later, the researchers found that the toddlers who were exposed to more wh- questions had a stronger vocabulary and better verbal reasoning skills. This study shows us how powerful these types of questions are, and the positive impact they can have on a toddler\u2019s language and cognitive development.<\/p>\n<h2>How Wh- Questions Develop<\/h2>\n<p>Not all wh- questions are created equal. As you can imagine, answering a \u2018why\u2019 question is much more difficult than answering a \u2018where\u2019 question. Between 24-36 months, \u2018what\u2019 questions are the easiest for toddlers to understand, followed by \u2018where\u2019 and \u2018who\u2019 questions. <em>What color is this?<\/em> <em>Where is your teddy bear?<\/em> <em>Who lives in that house?<\/em> are great wh- starter questions for toddlers. Asking and answering \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysparks.com\/2020\/03\/30\/developing-a-sense-of-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>when<\/strong><\/a>\u2019, \u2018how\u2019, and \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysparks.com\/2020\/01\/27\/why-your-toddler-asks-why-all-the-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>why<\/strong><\/a>\u2019 is always a bit tougher. Responses to these tougher wh- questions require more critical thinking and reasoning skills, so don\u2019t be too concerned if these don\u2019t sink in right away.
