We don\u2019t always associate creativity with an executive who restructures a company, a doctor who solves a medical mystery, or a mother who develops a way to stop her son\u2019s tantrums in their tracks. Creative thinking is a quality many people possess, and is associated with originality, flexibility, problem solving, innovation, exploration, self-esteem and motivation.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b><i>Highlights:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creativity goes beyond being artistic, musical, or imaginative. Creative thinking is a skill that\u2019s also associated with originality, flexible thinking, problem solving, innovation, exploration, and self-esteem.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All babies have the capacity for creativity!\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents can nurture creativity by:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promoting unstructured free play and pretend play.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creating toys with everyday objects (shoes, wooden spoons, or food storage containers).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allowing children to play with things the \u201cwrong\u201d way (driving toy cars upside down).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Letting them know it\u2019s okay to make mistakes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exposing babies to a variety of sensory information (getting messy with paint or dirt, playing outside in different lighting, shadows, or temperatures).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Creativity isn&#8217;t something your baby is either born with or without. It can be nurtured, and you can start today! Here are some ways:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Allow Plenty of Unstructured Free Play<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Baby classes, stroller running clubs and play dates are mainstays in modern life. As a new parent, especially if you&#8217;re home with your baby, these activities can save your sanity! It can be easy, though, to over-schedule your days. Allowing for free play and art is crucial to creative development. Creativity blossoms when children have the freedom to explore and try new and different things.<\/p>\n<p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2017\/06\/04\/serve-return-brain-shaping-back-and-forth-with-your-baby\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">interacting with your baby in meaningful ways<\/a> is the single most important aspect of his development, giving him some solo play time has benefits too. While you observe for safety, try setting your baby free to gravitate towards things he\u2019s interested in. This will start with tummy time, when you can place several objects around him. As he becomes mobile, he will love traversing the house and finding things to play with\u2014often everyday objects like the shoelaces on your sneakers.<\/p>\n<p>A note about pretend play: When he is about 18 months old, your baby\u2019s imagination will blossom as he enters the exciting world of <a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2017\/04\/28\/symbolic-play-imagination-comes-to-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pretend (symbolic) play<\/a>. Research has shown that this play is directly linked to a child\u2019s future capacity for creative thinking, so encouraging this play is key.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Create Toys With Everyday Objects<\/strong><br \/>\nAside from your sneakers, your baby will love to bang on a cardboard box with a wooden spoon, or shake a maraca made by filling an empty plastic bottle with dry beans. Seasoned parents will tell you that the food storage container cabinet is a wonderland for babies. They make a giant mess on the kitchen floor, but all the nesting, stacking and problem solving (which lid fits on this container and how do I get it on?) is creative fuel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Let Your Baby Play With Things The \u201cWrong\u201d Way<\/strong><br \/>\nMaybe he holds a toy spoon to a stuffed bear\u2019s foot and pretends to feed it, or he turns a toy car upside-down and pushes it on the floor. Instead of correcting him, try something like: \u201cOh, look! Your bear has a mouth on its foot!\u201d This encourages him to think outside of the box\u2014one of the hallmarks of creative thinking.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Embrace Mistakes<\/strong><br \/>\nWhile learning to master different tasks, your baby will miss the mark. Whether it\u2019s stacking rings or (down the road) learning to write letters, teach him that mistakes are part of the process and okay. Part of creativity is taking risks, and studies show that kids who are afraid of failure take fewer risks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Expose Your Baby to Varied Sensory Information<\/strong><br \/>\nEncourage creative risk-taking by allowing your baby to <a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2016\/05\/09\/messy-play-helping-your-babys-sensory-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">get messy during play and art activities<\/a>. Spark his senses by taking him outside often, where light, shadow, changing temperatures and varied textures abound.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s more important than ever to nurture your baby\u2019s creativity from the start. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wm.edu\/research\/ideation\/professions\/smart-yes.-creative-not-so-much.5890.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Research shows that American creativity has declined since 1990.<\/a> The study\u2019s author, Kyung-Hee Kim, suspects this may be the result of factors like strict gender roles, too much structure, and not allowing kids time and space to release creative energy.
