Issues with motor skills are less talked-about, but it\u2019s common for both gross and fine motor skills to be affected in different ways and to varying degrees in children with ASD.<\/p>\n<p>The good news: Research suggests that interventions for motor delays can be effective in reducing or closing developmental gaps, especially when started before age 3. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21610184\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This study<\/a> looked at 12-36 month-olds with ASD and confirmed that the earlier you start, the better.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b><i>Highlights:\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children with autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), often face issues with both gross and fine motor skills to varying degrees.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ASD-related motor challenges can be caused by differences in the brain, low muscle tone, anxiety in social situations, cognitive issues, or tight muscles.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interventions for ASD-related motor challenges include working with a physical therapist or occupational therapist, or a combination of the two.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early interventions for motor delays are very effective. Talk to your child\u2019s pediatrician or early intervention team to ask about specific ways you can support their motor skills goals at home.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2>How do motor challenges affect children with ASD?<\/h2>\n<p>Difficulties with motor skills can further interfere with already impaired social functioning for children with ASD. Social challenges make it hard for them to interact with peers, and not being able to keep up with group activities involving gross or fine motor skills (chasing games, for example, or taking turns adding pieces to a puzzle) can make it even harder. In turn, by not participating in motor-related activities, children miss out on opportunities to improve motor skills.<\/p>\n<p>Motor challenges can also decrease motivation when it comes to physical activity in general which, over time, can <a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2018\/03\/16\/running-jumping-throwing-keys-to-lifelong-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">affect long-term health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>What causes ASD-related motor challenges?<\/h2>\n<p>Motor challenges in children with ASD may be caused by:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Differences in the brain<\/strong>, which can interfere with the sensory and motor systems working together, resulting in inefficient and\/or uncoordinated movement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Low muscle tone<\/strong>, or hypotonia, which can interfere with motor development.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anxiety in social situations<\/strong>, which can result in shying away from group physical activity that develops motor skills.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cognitive issues<\/strong>, which can affect <a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2019\/02\/21\/motor-planning-learning-how-to-use-the-body\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">motor planning<\/a>, or the process of planning and executing movement tasks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Generalized joint hypermobility<\/strong>, or especially flexible joints, which requires extra muscle strength that children may not have.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tight muscles<\/strong>, which can cause toe walking, because the calf muscles are harder to stretch.<\/p>\n<h2>What are common interventions for ASD-related motor challenges?<\/h2>\n<p>There are many interventions to improve motor skills, which are addressed by a physical therapist, an occupational therapist, or a combination of the two. Therapy will depend on your child\u2019s needs, but focuses on strengthening muscles, improving balance and coordination, and practicing various gross and fine motor skills.<\/p>\n<p>Because motor issues can overlap with other areas of development, it\u2019s important that all therapists working with your child communicate with each other about goals, interventions, concerns, and progress.<\/p>\n<h2>Tips for Parents and Caregivers<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>If your child has not been evaluated but his gross and\/or fine motor skills are consistently delayed, ask your pediatrician for an evaluation referral. Social and language interventions are often prioritized, but it\u2019s also important to decrease developmental gaps in motor skills as early as possible.<\/li>\n<li>Follow your child\u2019s physical and\/or occupational therapists\u2019 lead.
