Despite experts <a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2016\/11\/01\/making-sense-of-the-new-screen-time-guidelines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">warning against screen time in babyhood<\/a>, developers of these videos claim they\u2019ll give even young infants a cognitive boost. But research tells us that not only do babies (and toddlers) not learn anything from videos, videos may actually <em>interfere<\/em> with learning.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b><i>Highlights:\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows that babies and toddlers are not only <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> learning from \u201ceducational baby videos\u201d, these videos may actually <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interfere <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with learning.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one experiment, scientists found that children who watched these videos didn\u2019t know any more than children who hadn\u2019t seen them. In another study, researchers discovered that for every hour per day spent watching videos, babies understood an average of six to eight <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fewer <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">words than babies who didn\u2019t watch them.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These \u201ceducational videos\u201d aren\u2019t effective because interacting with parents and caregivers is the number-one driver of learning in early development.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children can benefit from \u201cco-viewing\u201d high-quality educational videos together with parents. This is when a caregiver watches with the child and carries the subject matter into their interactions later.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2>What does the research on baby and toddler videos say?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20855901\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This University of Virginia (UVA) study<\/a> set out to see if videos designed to teach 12-18 month-olds new words were effective. Researchers split children and their parents into three groups: In one, children watched videos alone. In another, they watched videos with a parent. In the last group, the children didn\u2019t watch videos at all; the parents were instructed to try to teach them new words in everyday interactions.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that children who watched videos for a month (whether alone or with a parent) didn\u2019t know any more of the words than the children who had never seen the videos. The children in the parent-teaching group, on the other hand, learned substantially more words than those in either video group.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/apa.14291\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This study<\/a>, although small, looked into whether children ages 6-24 months who watched YouTube videos reaped any educational benefit from them. The researchers found that the children were certainly entertained but, alas, they did not learn anything from the videos.<\/p>\n<p>Results from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/news\/2007\/08\/07\/baby-dvds-videos-may-hinder-not-help-infants-language-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a University of Washington study<\/a> went beyond the conclusion that baby videos are not educational, showing that they can actually hinder learning. The researchers found that for every hour per day spent watching videos, babies understood an average of six to eight <em>fewer<\/em> words than babies who didn\u2019t watch them.<\/p>\n<h2>If baby and toddler videos aren\u2019t actually educational, why do so many parents think they are?<\/h2>\n<p>The UVA study suggests that the popularity of videos for little ones might have to do with how appealing the videos themselves are to parents. Parents who enjoyed the videos were more likely to report that they were beneficial to their child, while parents who did not enjoy the videos said they weren\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>The study&#8217;s author also highlighted that children are watching these videos during a time of rapid development, and parents may be attributing new skills to the videos rather than natural development.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, children often go through a period (or periods) when their vocabulary grows quickly in a short amount of time. Parents may mistakenly think the videos were responsible, when it was actually a natural \u201cword spurt.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Why don\u2019t babies and toddlers learn from videos?<\/h2>\n<p>Thanks to mounting research into development, we know that interacting with parents and caregivers is the number-one driver of learning in the early years. In fact, these interactions literally <a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2017\/06\/04\/serve-return-brain-shaping-back-and-forth-with-your-baby\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shape children\u2019s brains<\/a> in a way that affects them for the rest of their lives. <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/apa.14291\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This study<\/a>, in particular, shows how cognitive and language development thrive on feedback to babbling and other infant sounds. The author highlights that babies learn to babble from hearing people around them talk, and the more people around them respond to their babbling, the better their cognitive and language development will be.<\/p>\n<p>Another well-known study, which examines the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2017\/09\/09\/the-30-million-word-gap-what-it-means-for-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">30-Million Word Gap<\/a>,\u201d found that hearing more words as a baby during verbal interactions with parents was linked to extraordinary benefits years later, including a bigger vocabulary and better academic outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>If we look at baby and toddler videos in this light, we can see that rather than teaching a little one new words and concepts, they\u2019re taking away from the optimal set-up for learning: Parent-child interaction. Research has confirmed this, too. <a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2011-01124-003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A University of Massachusetts study<\/a> showed that conditions involving baby or toddler videos decreased parent-child interactions overall. There is one catch: Children can benefit from \u201cco-viewing\u201d videos with a parent or caregiver (this is when a parent or caregiver views high-quality videos <em>with <\/em>their child and then carries the subject matter into their interactions afterwards).<\/p>\n<p>The takeaway?
