Jindrich also happens to have a 2-year-old at home for that most-expert of test kitchens.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/classes\/browse\/Feeding_&amp;_Nutrition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Browse Our Expert-Led Online Toddler Feeding Classes<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\r\n<table>\r\n<tbody>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>\r\n<p><b><i>Highlights:\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nutrition experts recommend that 2-3 year-olds eat the following each day:\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3-5 oz of grains<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1-1.5 cups of raw or cooked vegetables<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.5 cups of fruit<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2-2.5 cups milk<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2-4 cups of protein<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repeatedly exposing them to new foods, involving children in menu planning, and having them help in preparation and cooking can help little ones learn to like different types of food.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While many families have a tendency to reach for snacks on the go, try to avoid this habit and make snack time a sit-down meal.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obesity is increasingly common in children, so it\u2019s critical to help them learn healthy eating habits early. Keep nutritious options handy and limit highly processed foods with a lot of sugar.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p>Here&#8217;s what they had to say:<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Daily Dive<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p>Hanson and Jindrich recommend that 2 to 3 year-olds eat the following each day:<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p>\u2022 3 to 5 ounces of grains (at least half should be whole grains)<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p>\u2022 1 to 1.5 cups raw or cooked vegetables<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p>\u2022 1.5 cups of fruit (go for whole fruits and minimize juice)<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p>\u2022 2 to 2.5 cups fat-free or low-fat milk<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p>\u2022 2 to 4 ounces of protein<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p>About that protein\u2014Hanson says it\u2019s good to provide a variety and suggests including lean meats, poultry, seafood, eggs, soy products, cooked beans (black, pinto, and kidney), nuts, and nut butters. Jindrich recommends repeated exposure to help a child try and (hopefully) learn to like a new type of food. She suggests involving children in menu planning and says to consider having them help in preparation and cooking as well. It may just spark their interest and avoid fear of the unknown. Jindrich agrees that vegetarian meals can be a quick go-to when needed. One of her favorites\u2014baby burritos. Crumble and saut\u00e9 tofu with taco seasoning and add beans, onions, peppers, etc. Add even more flavor and variety by topping the frittata with cheese, salsa, avocado, and olives.<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Snack Time!<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p>Before we jump into some tips for quick snacks, note that we all tend to eat on the fly. But Hanson says to avoid creating this habit in your children by making snack time a sit-down affair, just like a meal. A few ideas for quick snacks: fresh fruit or leftovers\u2014get out last night\u2019s chicken and cooked vegetables or whole-grain pasta and have a small serving.<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p>A favorite snack in the Jindrich household: Whole wheat toast with almond butter and fresh strawberries slices on top or peanut butter with sliced bananas.<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Avoiding Overeating from the Start<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p>Obesity is increasingly common in children (and adults), so it\u2019s critical to help your child create healthy eating habits from the start. As Hanson says, you are the gatekeeper at this moment in your child\u2019s life. \u201cFocus on bringing home foods that are rich in nutrients and limiting foods that are highly processed or that contain a lot of added sugar,\u201d she says. \u201cSurrounding your child with healthy foods makes the right food choices easy.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p>Most importantly, set a good example. Let your child participate in menu planning, shopping, and preparation in age-appropriate ways. Sit down as a family for meals and snacks (even if it\u2019s just a child and a parent or caregiver, that counts).
