However, speech is the act of using the voice, jaw, lips, tongue, and teeth to talk. Language is the entire system of words, grammar, symbols, non-verbal behavior (gestures and facial expressions), and basic social rules.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common speech disorders:<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Articulation disorder &#8211; Trouble making clear speech sounds.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stuttering &#8211; Taking long pauses or repeating parts of words.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voice disorder &#8211; Having poor voice quality which makes it hard to speak in appropriate ways.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common language disorders:\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Receptive disorder &#8211; Trouble understanding what others communicate.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expressive disorder &#8211; Trouble communicating with words and non-verbal language.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mixed Receptive-Expressive disorder &#8211; Trouble with both understanding and communicating.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speech and language disorders are diagnosed by a pediatric speech-language pathologist (SLP). An SLP uses various interventions to improve a child\u2019s ability to communicate. An essential part of this therapy is conducting speech and language exercises at home.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the Difference between Speech and Language?<\/h2>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p>The terms \u201cspeech\u201d and \u201clanguage\u201d are often used interchangeably, but they\u2019re defined in distinct ways. Speech is the act of using the voice, jaw, lips, tongue, and teeth to talk. Language, on the other hand, is the entire system of words, rules of spoken language (such as grammar), symbols, non-verbal cues (such as gestures, facial expressions, and body movements), and social \u201crules\u201d that help us communicate with each other effectively.<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p>Speech disorders and language disorders are also two distinct things:<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Speech Disorder<\/h2>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p>If a child has a speech disorder, it means he has trouble using his voice or coordinating his jaw, lips, tongue, and teeth to talk. The most common childhood speech disorders are:<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Articulation Disorder \u2013 <\/strong>A child has trouble making clear speech sounds. He may substitute one sound for another, drop sounds or syllables within words, or simplify tricky word combinations. Before age 3, articulation errors are common. Our article about <a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2019\/03\/07\/toddler-speech-articulation-whats-normal-for-months-12-24\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"articulation (opens in a new tab)\">articulation<\/a> goes into detail about this.<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Stuttering \u2013 <\/strong>A child may pause for an especially long time while trying to get a word out (<em>I want\u2026milk<\/em>), prolong certain speech sounds (<em>miiiiilk<\/em>), or repeat parts of words (<em>m-m-m-milk<\/em>). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asha.org\/public\/speech\/disorders\/stuttering\/\">According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association<\/a>, stuttering usually starts between ages 2 and 6.<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Voice Disorder \u2013 <\/strong>A child\u2019s voice quality (including pitch and volume) makes it hard for him to speak in an age-appropriate and culturally appropriate way.<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Language Disorders<\/h2>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p>Language disorders cause a breakdown in the way the brain processes the information that allows a child understand others or communicate effectively. Causes include genetics, preterm birth, hearing issues, developmental disorders such as Down syndrome or autism, and brain injury.<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p>There are three types of language disorders:<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Receptive Language Disorders \u2013 <\/strong>A child has trouble understanding what others are communicating.<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Expressive Language Disorders \u2013 <\/strong>A child has trouble communicating with words and non-verbal language.<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Mixed Receptive-Expressive Disorders \u2013 <\/strong>A child has trouble both understanding <em>and <\/em>communicating.<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2017\/12\/18\/evolution-receptive-language-months-0-24\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Receptive language (opens in a new tab)\">Receptive language<\/a> disorders can be hard to spot during toddlerhood, but may be present if your little one consistently lags behind on \u201cunderstanding\u201d milestones like responding to others\u2019 efforts to interact, answering questions, and following directions.<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2017\/09\/18\/supporting-expressive-language-skills-during-baby-toddler-hood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Expressive language (opens in a new tab)\">Expressive language<\/a> disorders are easier to flag early on. An essential part of speech-language therapy is helping your child at home, so be sure to follow your SLP\u2019s homework.<\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Importance of Early Intervention<\/h2>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p>The first three years of life are the richest window of possibility when it comes to closing developmental gaps.
