Toddlers, though, in general, all scribble the same. Across cultures, they go through predictable stages of scribbling\u2014from a single mark to a circle with lines sticking out (aka their first portrait of you!).<\/p>\r\n<p>Below we\u2019ll take a look at these universal stages of scribbling between ages 1\u00bd to 3 years. It\u2019s important to note that while most children pass through all of the stages, there\u2019s a lot of variability as to when and how they do it. Some might jump from one stage quickly, while others hang out for a while. What\u2019s more, there\u2019s often overlap between stages. The important thing is that your little one is scribbling by the time she\u2019s 18 months old.<\/p>\r\n<table>\r\n<tbody>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>\r\n<p><b><i>Highlights:\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the universal stages of scribbling between ages 1\u00bd to 3.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Uncontrolled Scribbling<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: This stage is less about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they\u2019re scribbling and more about the sensory experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Controlled Scribbling<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination improve, which makes their scribbling more controlled and purposeful.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Named Scribbling<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growing cognitive skills lead to drawings that symbolize things. For instance, shapes and lines may represent the family cat.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around age 3, stick figures emerge and drawings continue to evolve.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drawing is important across all areas of development, so it\u2019s great to provide plenty of opportunities for little ones to scribble and draw!\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n<h2>The Stages of Scribbling<\/h2>\r\n<p><strong>Uncontrolled Scribbling<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>After a toddler discovers that pressing a drawing tool on a drawing surface produces a mark, she enters the phase of random scribbling. During this stage, scribbling is less about <em>what<\/em> she\u2019s drawing and more about the sensory experience: Noticing how different drawing tools and materials feel and smell, and learning that she needs to press harder with certain tools (like crayons) to make a mark. At this point she\u2019s using big arm movements to make dots and other large marks, and may even send them off the paper.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Controlled Scribbling<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>As her <a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2017\/05\/01\/hands-our-most-incredible-tools-part-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fine motor skills<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2019\/05\/14\/hand-eye-coordination-how-the-eyes-brain-and-hands-work-together\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hand-eye coordination<\/a> improve, scribbling becomes more controlled and purposeful. You can help her learn to make different types of smaller lines, including horizontal, vertical, and curved. She will likely make the same type of mark over and over as she practices different lines. She may also become more aware of using different colors in a deliberate way.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Named Scribbling<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>Growing cognitive skills lead to the next stage: Understanding that drawing can symbolize something else. Although planning what to draw ahead of time comes later, your little one will name her drawings at this stage. She may fill a paper with shapes and lines and then call it the family cat. It probably won\u2019t look like a cat to you, but celebrate it anyway; this is a big step in your child\u2019s cognitive and language development.<\/p>\r\n<p>During this stage your little one\u2019s scribbling is more controlled, and her lines and shapes are varied, smaller, and more defined. She may even experiment with drawing stories or letters.<\/p>\r\n<h2>What\u2019s Next?<\/h2>\r\n<p>Around age 3, the stick figure emerges. Your little one\u2019s first stick figures will likely be circles with lines sticking out (again, children across cultures tend to draw stick figures similarly). From there, her drawing will continually evolve and become more planned, defined, recognizable, and creative.<\/p>\r\n<h2>What Can You Do?<\/h2>\r\n<p>Because drawing is so important <a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2019\/02\/15\/developmental-benefits-of-baby-toddler-art\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">across all areas of development<\/a>, the main thing you can do to encourage it is to create plenty of opportunities for your little one to draw (our BabySparks program includes several ideas for supporting the evolution of drawing). Offer a variety of tools and materials (crayons, colored pencils, markers, paintbrushes, finger paint, etc.) for her to experiment with. If you cringed at the mention of finger paint, remember that <a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2016\/05\/09\/messy-play-helping-your-babys-sensory-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">messy play<\/a> is great for sensory development, creativity, and cognitive flexibility!<\/p>\r\n<p>Lastly, experts highlight the important role of adult interaction around drawing, and they stress following the child\u2019s lead when talking about her artwork. For example, instead of saying, \u201cOh, is that a house?\u201d Try: \u201cI see you drew something here (point). Can you tell me what it is?\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>In addition, you can nurture a <a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2018\/03\/26\/nurturing-a-growth-mindset-in-your-child\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">growth-mindset<\/a> by praising your child\u2019s efforts instead of the end-result of her work. So instead of, \u201cWow, that\u2019s beautiful!\u201d Try: \u201cWow, I see you used a lot of colors!\u201d Or instead of, \u201cGood job! You\u2019re Mommy\u2019s little artist.\u201d Try: \u201cYou worked hard on this.
