Here\u2019s a step-by-step guide to help you simplify the process while ensuring you pack everything you need.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b><i>Highlights:\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first step in packing a birth bag is to find<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> out what your facility provides. It\u2019s common for hospitals to have items like diapers, nipple cream, or disposable mesh underwear available for you.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pack your birth bag at least one month before your due date.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pack essential items for yourself, such as important documents, photocopies of your ID, health insurance cards, your birth plan, cozy pajamas that open in the front, at least 2 comfortable bras, sanitary pads, nursing pads, and toiletries (see full list below).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For your baby, be sure to pack soft, comfortable clothes, a pack of diapers, baby wipes, diaper cream, baby blankets, and burping clothes (see full list below).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Find out ahead of time what the facility provides. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During your tour of the facility where you <a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2019\/03\/22\/preparing-for-baby-choosing-where-to-give-birth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">plan to give birth<\/a>, ask what they provide for mothers and babies. It\u2019s common for hospitals to provide lots of items, including diapers, nipple cream, and disposable mesh underwear (not sexy but definitely practical). You might even consider printing this article and checking off the things they provide.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pack your birth bag at least one month before your due date.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The best-case scenario is for your baby to stay put until at least 37 weeks. But it\u2019s possible that unexpected factors could lead to a pre-term birth. In either case, once your bag is packed you\u2019ll have one less thing to think about as you get closer to meeting your baby.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What to pack for you:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Important documents, including photocopies of your ID, insurance\/healthcare card, and Birth Plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Comfortable, pajama-like clothes that open in the front for <a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2019\/03\/04\/good-latch-a-key-to-breastfeeding-success\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">breastfeeding<\/a> and\/or holding your baby <a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2019\/03\/09\/the-benefits-of-skin-to-skin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">skin-to-skin<\/a>. You may want an extra layer like a robe or sweatshirt in case you feel chilly. Ask your doctor or midwife for an estimated length of stay and pack for that timeframe plus an extra day.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 At least two comfortable bras. If you plan to breastfeed, choose nursing ones. If you don\u2019t plan to breastfeed, you\u2019ll still want stretchy bras with no underwire because your breasts will be full and tender.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 If the facility provides disposable mesh underwear but you\u2019d rather have your own, bring big, comfortable underwear that you don\u2019t mind throwing away. You\u2019ll need them for comfort and to hold sanitary pads for post-birth bleeding.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Sanitary pads for post-birth bleeding.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Nursing pads. Even if you don\u2019t plan to breastfeed, milk will leak from your breasts.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Slippers or non-skid socks.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Toiletries, including nipple cream if you plan to breastfeed.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Cell phone charger.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Hair ties.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Lip balm.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Favorite snacks that the facility might not provide.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Going home clothes. Stick with maternity size for comfort; you\u2019ll still have a belly.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Note pad and pen. Doctors, midwives, doulas, nurses, lactation consultants and other maternity professionals are a wealth of information and you may want to take notes!<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Optional comfort items, like an eye mask for sleeping or your own pillow (in a colored pillowcase so it doesn\u2019t get mixed in with the hospital ones).<\/p>\n<p><strong>What to pack for your baby: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Infant carseat. Okay, so this doesn\u2019t actually go in your birth bag, but be sure it\u2019s properly installed in the car.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Soft, comfortable, easy-to-manage clothes \u2013 2 changes for each day. Think onesies or infant shirts with elastic-waist pants, or pajamas. If you plan to give birth at a hospital, they may want to keep your baby in infant shirts and diapers only (to make it easier to monitor her).<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 A pack of diapers. You may want to bring a mix of newborn size and the next size up (in case your baby is bigger than expected).<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Baby wipes (unscented are best for sensitive newborn bums).<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Diaper cream.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 2 burp cloths.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 2 baby blankets.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 2 pacifiers, if you plan to use them.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Going-home clothes. There are lots of adorable options out there, but the most important thing is that you dress your baby in soft, comfortable, easy-to-manage clothes. You may want to bring one outfit in newborn size and one in the next size up; you never know how big your baby will be!
