A positive tone promotes mutual respect.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Review your Birth Plan with your healthcare provider well ahead of your due date.<\/strong> This allows you to communicate and get on the same page about your wishes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What to Include in a Birth Plan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Basic details. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This includes your name, due date, and the names and phone numbers of your healthcare provider and pediatrician.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Medical conditions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>List anything (pregnancy-related or not) that could impact you or your baby during and after labor and delivery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who you want in the room.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>List any family members, friends, or support persons (like a doula). If you plan to give birth at a teaching hospital and do not want students present, state that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How you hope to give birth.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This could be <a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2019\/03\/21\/preparing-for-baby-the-basics-of-giving-birth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vaginally<\/a>, via <a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2019\/03\/21\/preparing-for-baby-c-section-basics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cesarean-section<\/a>, VBAC (vaginal birth after C-section), or even a water birth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your preferences for labor.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Do you want to be able to walk around, use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/labor-and-delivery\/multimedia\/labor\/sls-20077009?s=7v\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">birth ball<\/a>, take a shower, listen to music, or do anything else during labor?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your preferences for managing pain.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Do you want an epidural? Another type of pain medication? Do you wish to avoid pain medication and use an alternative, such as breathing techniques?<\/p>\n<p>This is a good place to point out the importance of flexibility. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21733109\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Research<\/a> shows that a surprising number of women who wished to avoid an epidural ended up getting one. What\u2019s more, greater than 90% of women who got an epidural were happy with their decision. That isn\u2019t to discourage you from avoiding pain medication, it\u2019s just to remind you it\u2019s okay to change your mind.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anything you hope to avoid.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This could include labor-inducing medications like Pitocin, procedures like an episiotomy or a C-section, or continuous fetal monitoring. Perhaps more than any other part of your Birth Plan, be sure to communicate with your healthcare provider about things you hope to avoid, and understand what types of circumstances might lead to them being recommended or required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your post-birth preferences.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Do you want to hold your baby <a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2019\/03\/09\/the-benefits-of-skin-to-skin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">skin-to-skin<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2019\/03\/04\/good-latch-a-key-to-breastfeeding-success\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">breastfeed<\/a> her immediately after she\u2019s born? If so, for how long? Do you want to be with your baby (or have a support person present) for post-birth procedures like bathing and getting checked by a <a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2019\/04\/01\/preparing-for-baby-choosing-a-pediatrician\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pediatrician<\/a>? Do you plan to have blood from your baby\u2019s umbilical cord collected and stored (you can read what the American Academy of Pediatrics says about cord blood banking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/ages-stages\/prenatal\/decisions-to-make\/Pages\/Should-We-Store-Our-Newborns-Cord-Blood.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>)? If your baby is a boy, do you want to have him <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/ages-stages\/prenatal\/decisions-to-make\/Pages\/Should-the-Baby-be-Circumcised.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">circumcised<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve finalized your Birth Plan, make several copies and pack it in your birth bag.
