Amidst the dizzying array of options, you may wonder what you <em>really <\/em>need.<\/p>\n<p>We have a separate article dedicated to recommended nursery items, but when it comes to must-haves the list is simple.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b><i>Highlights:\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a list of essential nursery items:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Crib:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Make sure it meets safety standards and is set up in a safe and convenient place.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Crib Bedding<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: All you need is a waterproof mattress pad and a bottom sheet that both fit snugly. Avoid lots of bedding, pillows, or stuffed animals in the crib because they can pose suffocation risks.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Crib Mattress<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Make sure it fits snugly, is firm, and holds its shape.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Smoke Detector, and Carbon Monoxide Detector if your home requires it (see below)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Check these regularly to make sure they\u2019re functioning properly.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Storage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Having a place to store baby supplies can help keep the nursery organized and safe. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Keep in mind that buying nursery furniture doesn\u2019t have to break the bank. You can find many items second-hand but still in great shape (but be sure, especially with cribs, that they meet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpsc.gov\/Newsroom\/Video\/a-safer-generation-of-cribs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">current safety standards<\/a>). Even if you buy items brand-new, you can find options that are safe <em>and<\/em> affordable.<\/p>\n<p>Now, let\u2019s get to those must-haves:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Crib <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When choosing a crib, keep these points in mind:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It must meet current safety standards.<\/li>\n<li>Do you want a crib that will convert to a bed? If so, a convertible crib can be an economical, long-term choice.<\/li>\n<li>Is the nursery small? You can find a crib that is smaller than a standard crib but still large enough to last until the toddler years. Or, you can look for a standard crib with built-in storage to maximize the space.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When setting up the crib, remember these safety tips:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Consider putting the crib near the door for easy access in case of emergency.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid putting the crib near a window, where curious little hands can grab shades, curtains, cords or strings that could be a suffocation or strangulation risk. Cribs near windows also pose a fall risk once little ones start climbing.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid hanging anything on the wall behind the crib that could fall on and injure your baby.<\/li>\n<li>Keep electrical cords away from the crib.<\/li>\n<li>If you attach a mobile, be sure it\u2019s very secure and out of your baby\u2019s reach. Remove it as soon he can sit up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that for the first 6 months your baby sleep in her own bed in the same room as you. Not only does this reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), it also simplifies nighttime feedings. To save space, you may consider getting a bassinet or portable crib for your bedroom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Crib Bedding<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to resist decking out the crib with cute bedding and soft stuffed animals, but steer clear of everything but a waterproof mattress pad and a bottom sheet (both snugly fitted). Anything else in the crib could put your baby at risk of suffocation or strangulation (you can read all about safe sleep <a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2019\/02\/27\/infant-sleep-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Wondering when you can give your tot a blanket and stuffed animal? The AAP says there\u2019s no research showing exactly when it\u2019s safe to do so, but experts tend to agree that these items pose little risk to healthy babies after age 1.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Crib Mattress<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are two things to remember when choosing a crib mattress:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It must fit snugly, with no more than two fingers of space between the mattress and the edge of the crib.<\/li>\n<li>It must be firm. Mattresses that do not hold their shape can pose a suffocation risk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Smoke Detector<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Be sure to check all smoke detectors regularly to ensure they\u2019re working properly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carbon Monoxide Detector<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is important in any home with an attached garage or appliances that burn gas, oil, wood, coal or other fuels. Be sure to choose a detector that meets the <a href=\"https:\/\/standardscatalog.ul.com\/standards\/en\/standard_2034\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UL standard 2034<\/a>, and check it regularly to ensure it\u2019s functioning properly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Storage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s a dresser, shelves, bins or any other storage set-up, having a place to organize baby supplies, clothes, books and toys is a sanity-saver.
