Our list of essentials for month one is a simple guide to having just that \u2014 the essentials \u2014 so you can spend less time shopping and more time bonding.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b><i>Highlights:\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no reason to go overboard buying baby stuff you may not need. Just focus on the essentials! (See below for a full checklist of items for month one.)\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Feeding<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Whether you plan to breast- or formula feed,\u00a0 you\u2019ll want to have things like bibs, burp cloths, and a highchair.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Clothing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Remember that newborns sleep <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a lot <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grow<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a lot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! Keep that in mind when purchasing clothes. For all sized items, go for a mix of newborn and the next size up. Some essentials are onesies, pajamas, pants, and swaddle blankets.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Bathing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: An infant tub, baby washcloths, baby towels, and wash\/lotion for sensitive skin.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Diapering<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: If you\u2019re going with disposable diapers, one large box of size 1 diapers can get you started. For cloth diapers, experts recommend having 24. You\u2019ll also need bottles (see below).<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Nipple cream \u2014 To sooth your nipples as you <a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2019\/03\/04\/solutions-for-common-breastfeeding-problems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">adjust<\/a> to breastfeeding.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Nursing bras and shirts \u2014 For quick and easy access to your breasts.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Nursing pads \u2014 To catch milk <a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2017\/03\/14\/breastfeeding-is-wonderful-and-sometimes-awkward\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">leaking<\/a> from your breasts.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Nursing cover \u2014 For privacy while nursing in public.<\/p>\n<p>If you plan to formula-feed your baby:<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Formula \u2014 Start with one container so you can monitor your baby\u2019s reaction. Some babies are allergic or sensitive to formula ingredients and require <a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2019\/04\/05\/how-to-choose-baby-formula\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a different type<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 2-4 <a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2019\/04\/05\/how-to-choose-baby-bottles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bottles\/nipples<\/a> \u2014 We recommend starting out with a small number of bottles, simply because there are so many options and your baby may end up preferring one over another. Once you find a brand and type that works well, you can stock up. Bottles come in different sizes; the smaller ones work well for the first month, when newborns drink about 2-3 ounces per feed.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Bottle brush with nipple brush \u2014 For cleaning bottles and nipples.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clothing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For the first month your baby will be <a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2019\/02\/27\/the-role-of-sleep-in-baby-toddler-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sleeping<\/a> <em>a lot<\/em>, so keep that in mind when you\u2019re stocking up on clothes. She\u2019ll also grow a lot! In fact, some babies outgrow a newborn size in just a few days. For all sized items, go for a mix of newborn and the next size up.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Laundry detergent for sensitive skin \u2014 Be sure to wash new clothes before your baby wears them.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 4-8 onesies and\/or infant t-shirts<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 4-8 pants if needed for warmth \u2014 If it\u2019s warm enough, go for just a onesie, t-shirt, or diaper; the fewer the clothes <a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2019\/02\/19\/naked-time-a-developmentally-friendly-experience-for-baby\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the better<\/a>, developmentally-speaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 4-8 pajamas<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 2-4 sweaters or sweatshirts<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Socks or booties \u2014 Use these when you need to keep your baby\u2019s feet warm. Otherwise, keep her <a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2017\/08\/07\/why-barefoot-is-best-for-baby\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">barefoot<\/a>, it\u2019s good for her development!<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Mittens \u2014 To keep her from accidentally scratching her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Hat \u2014 For sun and\/or cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Outerwear \u2014 If you live in a cold climate.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Outfits \u2014 This is up to you; as we mentioned your little one will be snoozing most of the time during the first month. If you do pick up a few outfits, be sure they\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2019\/03\/18\/how-to-dress-your-baby-or-toddler-in-a-development-friendly-way\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">development-friendly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 2 wearable or swaddle blankets \u2014 It isn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2019\/02\/27\/infant-sleep-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">safe<\/a> for your infant to sleep with a blanket, but these will keep her cozy.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 2 baby blankets \u2014 For swaddling, spreading on the ground for play, tucking around your baby in the stroller, etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bathing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2019\/02\/26\/bathing-your-baby-a-step-by-step-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bathing<\/a> your baby, what you need is simple and straightforward:<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Infant tub<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 2-4 baby wash cloths<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 2 baby towels<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Baby wash for sensitive skin<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Baby lotion for sensitive skin<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diapering<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll be changing a lot of diapers during the first month. Here\u2019s what you\u2019ll need:<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Disposable diapers \u2014 You\u2019ll go through at least 6 wet and 3 or 4 poops a day at first, but you may not want to stock up for an entire month because it\u2019s hard to predict how fast your baby will grow. One large box of both newborn and size 1 diapers will get you started. If you plan to give birth at a hospital, ask on the hospital tour if they\u2019ll send you home with diapers (many do).<\/p>\n<p>OR<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Cloth diapers \u2014 According to cloth diapering experts, the magic number to have is 24, but the number you get ultimately depends on how often you want to wash them. To read all about cloth diapering and items you\u2019ll need if you go this route, head to <a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2019\/03\/22\/cloth-diapers-are-they-right-for-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this article<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you go for disposable or cloth diapers, you\u2019ll need these diapering supplies:<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Diaper rash cream<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Wipes \u2014 Unscented ones are gentler on your baby\u2019s bum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Getting Out of the House<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what you\u2019ll need for safety and comfort when you head out and about with your baby:<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Infant car seat \u2014 Be sure this is properly installed in your car at least one month before your due date.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Stroller with infant car seat base \u2014 The car seat base will allow you to transfer your baby\u2019s car seat from the car to the stroller. When she outgrows her infant car seat, simply remove the base.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Baby carrier \u2014 These are great for a lot of reasons, which you can read about <a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2019\/02\/25\/baby-wearing-benefits-safety-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Diaper bag<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Portable changing pad<\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Pacifiers, <a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2017\/08\/21\/pacifier-use-the-good-the-bad-how-to-use-them-wisely\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">if you plan to use them<\/a> \u2013 Start with 2 (so you have a backup), but don\u2019t go overboard; pacifiers come in different shapes and you may need to try different ones.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keeping Your Baby Groomed and Healthy <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2610 Baby grooming and health kit \u2014 Be sure it includes nail clippers, a hairbrush, a thermometer, and a nasal aspirator.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Playing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the first month your baby\u2019s favorite \u201ctoy\u201d will be YOU, which works out well because all the talking, singing and acting silly you do with her <a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2017\/06\/04\/serve-return-brain-shaping-back-and-forth-with-your-baby\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">builds her brain<\/a>. We caution against overusing them, though. We\u2019re all about development, after all, and these items can interfere with what babies need for optimal development \u2014 including being cuddled, interacting with caregivers, and having freedom to stretch and move.<\/p>\n<p>Stocking up on essentials is just one important thing to do before baby arrives.
