And for group childcare providers, little ones biting brings up safety issues and parent concerns.<\/p>\n<p>As dreaded as it is, biting in toddlerhood is common \u2014 and it has nothing to do with being a bad kid, parent, or caregiver. There are good reasons toddlers bite. Still, it\u2019s important to address it, both when it occurs and also by targeting the underlying reasons your child is biting.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b><i>Highlights:\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biting in toddlerhood is normal and has nothing to do with being a bad kid, parent, or caregiver.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toddlers will often bite because they:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t have the words to say they\u2019re angry, especially during sharing squabbles.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Need to express overwhelming feelings like frustration, sadness, or even excitement.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack language skills.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Want your attention.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feel overstimulated, overtired, or antsy.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides trying to communicate something, toddlers also bite when they\u2019re:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trying to relieve teething pain (molars emerge after age 1).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seeking oral stimulation.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experimenting with new behaviors out of curiosity.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2>Reasons for Biting<\/h2>\n<p>Usually, toddlers bite because they\u2019re trying to communicate something they don\u2019t yet have the <a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2018\/02\/14\/the-evolution-of-speech-12-24-months\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">language<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2017\/10\/15\/the-evolution-of-emotions-part-2-your-babys-second-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emotional skills<\/a> to express in an acceptable way. Famous triggers for biting include:<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2019\/03\/06\/why-is-it-so-hard-for-toddlers-to-share\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sharing<\/a> Squabbles \u2014 <\/strong>This is the number-one setting for biting. Toddler A grabs Toddler B\u2019s toy. Toddler B is angry, and the feeling overwhelms him because he simply doesn\u2019t understand it. He wants the toy back, but he doesn\u2019t have the words to express that. He bites Toddler A out of anger and frustration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Overwhelming Feelings \u2014 <\/strong>As in the example above, toddlers\u2019 feelings are big, often overwhelming, and hard for them to understand (let alone manage). They may bite to express anger, sadness, frustration, or even excitement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lacking Language Skills \u2014 <\/strong>A toddler may bite because he can\u2019t say something he wants to say. Another child may be standing too close to him, for example, or he may be trying in vain to tell you something that you just can\u2019t translate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Seeking Attention \u2014 <\/strong>Toddlers want what they want, and they want it RIGHT NOW. Toddlers can\u2019t have undivided attention every second, of course, and they may bite when they want something and their parent\/caregiver is busy with another task.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Feeling Overstimulated, Overtired or Antsy \u2014 <\/strong>Some children are sensitive to crowds, bright lights, or loud noises. They may react to feeling overstimulated by biting. Feeling tired can also trigger biting, the same way it can trigger tantrums. On the other hand, having <em>too much <\/em>energy can also lead to biting.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from biting as a way to communicate, toddlers may also bite because they are:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trying to Relieve Teething Pain \u2014 <\/strong>Babyhood is heyday for <a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2018\/02\/19\/all-about-teething\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">teething<\/a>, but that doesn\u2019t mean your toddler is out of the woods. Emerging molars may be the culprit for biting after age 1.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Seeking Oral Stimulation \u2014 <\/strong>It\u2019s normal for babies to put everything in their mouths; it\u2019s one of the ways they learn about the world. Mouthing usually decreases as they enter toddlerhood and begin to use their hands to explore objects. Some toddlers crave having things in their mouths, though, and may bite others as a result. Seeking oral stimulation could be due to a breakdown in <a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2019\/02\/21\/sensory-integration-how-the-senses-work-together\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sensory integration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Experimenting with Behavior \u2014 <\/strong>The same way your toddler may throw his cup on the floor at mealtime and turn to see how you react, he may bite because he\u2019s curious to see what happens.<\/p>\n<h2>What You Can Do<\/h2>\n<p>Try to figure out why your toddler is biting. Then, you can help him learn alternate, acceptable behaviors. Take note of the circumstances around his biting. Whom does he bite? What\u2019s happening when it occurs?
