When children know what to anticipate, it reinforces the language learning process.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chores can teach language skills in the following ways:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exposes them to new vocabulary and concepts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teaches them about sorting and categorizing objects.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allows them to practice following directions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Introduces the idea of sequencing (learning to do things in the correct order).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helps them learn how to work with others to complete a task.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>According to Pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist Mandy Alvarez, \u201cthe routine nature of chores offers predictable expectations. When children know what to anticipate, they\u2019re much more available for learning.\u201d Plus, Alvarez adds, \u201cexposure to similar language each time a child engages in a chore reinforces that learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s not just the real chores that count. \u201cImitating chores,\u201d Alvarez says, \u201ccreates an invaluable opportunity for <a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2017\/04\/28\/symbolic-play-imagination-comes-to-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">imaginative play<\/a>, which is essential for language development. While imitating a chore, a child creates his own story, takes on new perspectives, and plays with ideas. Imaginative play is also important because, like language, it involves the ability to represent symbolically. As a child\u2019s play evolves, his language closely follows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at some of the language skills your toddler learns during simple, routine chores like sweeping, wiping tables, and putting things away.<\/p>\n<h2>How Chores Teach Language Skills<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Vocabulary &amp; Concepts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Chores expose your little one to new vocabulary and concepts, such as broom, sweep, cloth, squeeze, wipe, on, across, inside, etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sorting &amp; Categorizing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When your toddler helps you put things away, he learns about sorting and categorizing objects. While picking up toys, for instance, he learns that blocks go in a bin together, small cars go in another bin, and big cars go on a shelf. In his toy kitchen, you can start to teach him to group vegetables in one container, fruits in another, and so on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Following Directions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/administrator.babysparks.com\/2019\/02\/15\/the-evolution-of-following-directions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Understanding and carrying out instructions<\/a> is a complex language skill at the heart of learning and success in daily life. Your little one gets lots of practice following simple, one or two-step directions while helping around the house.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sequencing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Being able to perform actions in the correct order to complete a task is an essential language skill, and chores are a great way to teach it.
