Little ones doing chores may not be efficient, but encouraging them to help around the house offers many rewards!\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p class=\"Body\">Research draws a clear line between doing chores as a child and becoming a happier, more successful adult. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adultdevelopmentstudy.org\/grantandglueckstudy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This famous 75-year study<\/a>\u00a0out of Harvard University found that people who were given chores as children went on to develop a spirit of collaboration and being a valuable part of something bigger than themselves. This, in turn, led to professional success and better relationships.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ghk.h-cdn.co\/assets\/cm\/15\/12\/55071e0298a05_-_Involving-children-in-household-tasks-U-of-M.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This study<\/a> out of the University of Minnesota looked at 20 years of data and made a similar conclusion: The best predictor of happiness and success in young adulthood (including not doing drugs, excelling in school and the workplace, and building strong relationships) was having done chores as young as age 3 or 4.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">But why wait until your child is 3 or 4? In her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/julie_lythcott_haims_how_to_raise_successful_kids_without_over_parenting\/transcript?language=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TED Talk<\/a>,\u00a0Julie Lythcott-Haims (author of &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/How-Raise-Adult-Overparenting-Prepare\/dp\/1627791779?hvadid=241613266764&amp;hvdev=c&amp;hvlocphy=9011915&amp;hvnetw=g&amp;hvpos=1t1&amp;hvqmt=b&amp;hvrand=9450616728174121834&amp;hvtargid=kwd-297511316556&amp;keywords=how+to+raise+an+adult&amp;qid=1540394052&amp;sr=8-1&amp;tag=googhydr-20&amp;ref=sr_1_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How to Raise an Adult<\/a>&#8216;\u00a0and former dean of freshman at Stanford University) talks about the importance of doing chores and says: \u201cThe earlier you start, the better.\u201d The University of Minnesota research echoes this by highlighting that the lifelong lessons linked to chores are best learned when young, and that the earlier children start chores the easier it is to keep them involved as they get older.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">So we say: Why not start now?<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 13.0pt;\">How to Build Chores into Your Toddler\u2019s Day<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"Body\">First, consider what your toddler is<a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2017\/07\/24\/when-is-my-toddler-ready-for-a-fork-a-guide-to-age-appropriate-self-care-tasks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> capable of doing\u00a0<\/a>(maybe more than you think!).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">Then, start with simple, daily chores that can become habits. Stick to chores that are age-appropriate, doable, and something your little one enjoys. Luckily toddlers are usually game for being little helpers.
