Now, science is beginning to agree.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">Last year, the first-ever <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aappublications.org\/news\/2017\/05\/04\/PASScreenTime050417\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study<\/a><\/strong> to examine a link between screen time and language delays was published and presented at the annual Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting. In the study, involving 894 children between the ages of 6 months and 2 years, researchers recorded amounts of screen time with hand-held devices, administered language delay screenings, and found that every 30-minute increase in daily screen time was linked to a 49% increased risk of an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2017\/09\/18\/supporting-expressive-language-skills-during-baby-toddler-hood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">expressive speech<\/a><\/strong> delay.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b><i>Highlights:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers found a link between screen time and expressive language delays in children between the ages of 6 months and 2 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expressive language (what we communicate) is one of the three branches of language, along with receptive language (what we understand), and pragmatic language (how we navigate social interaction).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speech-language pathologists explain that all three branches of language are at risk when there\u2019s a rise in electronic use among babies and toddlers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children in front of screens miss out on these critical aspects of language development:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Conversations &amp; Other Human Interactions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Language learning happens when children take in words, vocal intonations, gestures, and facial expressions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Learning to Filter Information<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Children need opportunities to notice what\u2019s happening in their environment, and learn how to choose where to place their attention.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Play<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Interacting with three-dimensional toys, engaging in pretend play, and playing with caregivers all support language development.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p class=\"Body\">Expressive language (what we communicate) is one of three branches of language, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2017\/09\/18\/supporting-receptive-language-skills-during-baby-toddler-hood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>receptive language<\/strong><\/a> (what we understand), and <a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2017\/08\/21\/pragmatic-language-how-your-baby-learns-to-relate-to-others\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>pragmatic\/social language<\/strong><\/a> (how we navigate social interaction).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">We checked in with speech-language pathologists Mandy Alvarez and Melissa Marinelli Izquierdo for their thoughts on screen time and language development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">\u201cIn our practice we\u2019ve seen a rise not only in the expressive language delays the study points out, but also in receptive and pragmatic language delays,\u201d Alvarez and Marinelli say. \u201cThis has happened alongside a rise in electronics use among children as young as babies and toddlers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">Although more studies (like the one mentioned above) are needed, Alvarez and Izquierdo explain some of the ways a child may miss out on critical aspects of language development when he\u2019s in front of a screen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><b>Conversation &amp; Other Human Interaction<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">The number of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2017\/09\/09\/the-30-million-word-gap-what-it-means-for-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">words<\/a><\/strong> babies and toddlers hear is linked to better language skills, but it\u2019s not just the words that matter. Every time a caregiver talks to a child (even before the child can talk back) language learning is happening on multiple levels: The child is taking in words, vocal intonation, gestures and facial expressions\u2014all the while connecting dots between these things and what they mean. A child gets none of this rich learning when he is using an electronic device.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><b>Learning to Filter Information<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">An important receptive language task is being able to choose what to pay attention to while filtering out other things. We learn this by being in different environments, noticing what\u2019s going on around us, and choosing where to place our attention. When a child is in front of a screen, the screen dictates where he should place his attention, and the child immediately stops noticing what\u2019s happening around him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">Over time, this can weaken his ability to take in and filter information, as well as switch attention from one task to another. Trouble shifting attention can cause academic problems down the road, like difficulty copying from a board, scanning a room, taking notes, and even reading.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><b>Play<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">Play provides so many language learning opportunities that it\u2019s hard to elaborate on them all!<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">When babies are interacting with three-dimensional toys they\u2019re learning tangible language concepts like size, texture, and quantity. Looking at pictures of shapes on a screen doesn\u2019t come close to this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">When a caregiver participates in their play, they learn things like vocabulary, grammar, sequencing, and all of the interaction-based language lessons mentioned above. When toddlers begin <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2017\/04\/28\/symbolic-play-imagination-comes-to-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pretend play<\/a><\/strong>, social language learning is supercharged as they act out real-life scenarios that have sparked their attention. None of this learning occurs during screen time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">It\u2019s important to note, too, that just as there are milestones for movement, there are also milestones for play. Play skills build on each other, and each requires practice.
