At this age, children are becoming more social, verbal, imaginative, and independent, but they still rely heavily on parents for connection, reassurance, and help managing their emotions. That combination can lead to a seemingly endless stream of bids for your attention.<\/p>\n

    Why do they want so much attention?<\/h2>\n

    At 44 months, your child is developing a stronger interest in other people. By around age four, children are increasingly interested in playing with peers, engaging in pretend play, and responding to other people\u2019s feelings.<\/p>\n

    You are also your child\u2019s favorite audience. When they show you a drawing, tell you a story, build a tower, or perform a silly dance, they are often doing more than asking you to watch. They are inviting you into their world.<\/p>\n

    Responsive back and forth interactions with caring adults are an important part of early development. Harvard\u2019s Center on the Developing Child describes these interactions as \u201cserve and return,\u201d where a child initiates an interaction and an adult responds. These exchanges support developing language, social skills, emotional wellbeing, and relationships.<\/p>\n

    So when your child says, \u201cLook at me!\u201d for what feels like the 100th time, they may be communicating, \u201cConnect with me,\u201d \u201cSee what I can do,\u201d or simply, \u201cI want to share this with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

    When attention seeking becomes exhausting<\/h2>\n

    Understanding why your child wants attention does not mean you have to provide it constantly. Parents need breaks, too.<\/p>\n

    Your child may interrupt while you are talking to someone, climb onto you while you are trying to work, repeatedly ask you to play, or become upset when you turn your attention elsewhere. They may even increase their behavior when you try to ignore it.<\/p>\n

    This can leave parents feeling frustrated, guilty, or completely depleted.<\/p>\n

    The goal is not to eliminate your child\u2019s need for attention. Instead, help them learn that they can have meaningful connection with you while also developing the ability to wait, play independently, and tolerate moments when you are unavailable.<\/p>\n

    Give attention before they have to ask for it<\/h2>\n

    One helpful strategy is to intentionally build small pockets of focused attention into your day.<\/p>\n

    Even a few minutes of putting your phone away, getting down on the floor, and letting your child lead the play can create a meaningful connection. Notice what they are doing, respond to their ideas, and show genuine interest.<\/p>\n

    These moments do not have to be elaborate. Harvard\u2019s serve and return approach emphasizes noticing what captures a child\u2019s attention and responding to it.<\/p>\n

    You might say, \u201cYou worked really hard on that tower,\u201d or \u201cYou want me to see how high you can jump!\u201d<\/p>\n

    When children regularly experience these responsive interactions, they have opportunities to feel seen and understood.<\/p>\n

    Teach your child how to wait<\/h2>\n

    You cannot always stop what you are doing to respond. That is okay.<\/p>\n

    Instead of simply saying, \u201cNot now,\u201d try acknowledging the request and giving your child a clear expectation.<\/p>\n

    \u201cI hear you. You want me to watch your picture. I am going to finish this, and then I will come look.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Your child may still protest. That does not mean you have done something wrong. Learning to wait is a skill, and skills take practice.<\/p>\n

    You can also give your child something specific to do while they wait: \u201cWhile I finish this, why don\u2019t you can add more blocks to your tower?\u201d<\/p>\n

    Encourage independent play gradually<\/h2>\n

    Independent play does not mean leaving your child to entertain themselves for hours. At 44 months, it is perfectly reasonable for your child to still want frequent interaction with you.<\/p>\n

    Start small. Sit nearby while your child plays, then gradually move farther away. You might say, \u201cI\u2019m going to sit here and read while you make your animals a zoo.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Praise the effort rather than the length of time: \u201cYou thought of something fun to do all by yourself!\u201d<\/p>\n

    Over time, your child can learn that being alone for a few minutes does not mean being disconnected from you.<\/p>\n

    Remember what your child is really asking for<\/h2>\n

    Constant attention seeking can be incredibly annoying, especially when you are trying to accomplish something. But beneath the repeated \u201cMommy, look!\u201d is often a child who wants to feel connected, important, and understood.<\/p>\n

    You do not have to say yes every time. You do not have to entertain your child all day. And you do not have to feel guilty for needing time to yourself.<\/p>\n

    Instead, aim for a balance: connect, acknowledge, set limits, and give your child opportunities to practice independence.<\/strong><\/p>\n
