In fact, when he\u2019s born he\u2019s already acquired knowledge about language, food preferences, and emotions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">Here are some of the fascinating discoveries from research about what babies learn in the womb.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b><i>Highlights:\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies show that when babies are born, they\u2019ve already acquired knowledge about language, food preferences, and emotions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A baby\u2019s hearing develops around 24 weeks in the womb, which allows them to learn the sound of their mother\u2019s voice and be able to recognize her native language.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When starting solids, babies prefer flavors they\u2019ve tasted in the womb when their mothers ate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers found a link between pregnant mothers\u2019 emotions and children\u2019s mental health. For instance, fetuses exposed to high levels of maternal stress are more likely to develop anxiety or stress disorders later on in life.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These findings can encourage women to talk and sing to their babies, be more aware of their nutrition, and focus on their emotional health during pregnancy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p class=\"Body\"><b>The Sound of Your Voice<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">Your baby\u2019s hearing develops around 24 weeks in the womb, and the first sound he learns is your voice. <a href=\"http:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/208\/4448\/1174.long\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A well-known study<\/a>\u00a0made clear that newborns recognize their mother\u2019s voice. Researchers used a rigged pacifier to show that newborns sucked more to hear a recording of their mother&#8217;s voice compared to a recording of a stranger&#8217;s voice. Experts believe this learning helps your baby <a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2016\/08\/31\/healthy-attachment-brighter-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bond<\/a> with you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><b>Language<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">In the womb your baby not only learns the sound of your voice, he also learns to recognize the language you speak. Newborns can tell the difference between their mothers\u2019 language and foreign ones, and even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0960982209018247\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cry in the accent<\/a>\u00a0of their mothers\u2019 native tongue!<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/news\/2013\/08\/babies-learn-recognize-words-womb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a study<\/a>\u00a0examining language learning in utero, researchers directed mothers to play a recording containing music and specific made-up words. When the babies were born, they recognized the made-up words\u2014an effect strengthened by the number of times they heard the recording.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-babies-study\/evidence-suggests-babies-in-womb-start-learning-earlier-than-thought-study-idUSKBN0FU27K20140728\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Other researchers<\/a> asked a group of mothers to repeat the same nursery rhyme while pregnant, then used fetal heart monitors to discover that fetuses\u2019 heart rates slowed every time the familiar rhyme was recited.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">Still other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/02\/21\/well\/family\/language-lessons-start-in-the-womb.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research<\/a>\u00a0showed that Dutch adults adopted from Korea learned Korean language sounds more easily than Dutch adults born to Dutch parents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><b>Your Favorite Flavors &amp; Other Lessons About Food<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">When you eat while you\u2019re pregnant, the flavors of your food enter the amniotic fluid your baby swallows. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parentingscience.com\/prenatal-learning-about-food.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Several studies<\/a>\u00a0show that when starting solids, babies prefer flavors they learned in the womb.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">A mother\u2019s diet during pregnancy can have long-term effects on her baby\u2019s health. Researchers looked at adults who were born after the \u201cDutch Hunger Winter,\u201d a period of famine during World War II. Those whose mothers were not able to eat enough during the beginning of pregnancy were born with altered genes that made them more susceptible to obesity, diabetes and heart disease. In her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/annie_murphy_paul_what_we_learn_before_we_re_born\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2010 TED Talk<\/a>, reporter Annie Murphy Paul suggests that this change may reflect the fetus learning that because food is scarce, it needs to hold tight to every calorie it consumes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><b>Emotional Lessons<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">Remarkably, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/dn7336-911-babies-inherit-stress-from-mothers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research<\/a>\u00a0examining children born to mothers who witnessed the 9\/11 attacks first-hand while pregnant found that the mothers who developed post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) gave birth to children wired to be more prone to developing PTSD themselves. This suggests that fetuses may learn from high amounts of maternal stress that the world is not safe, and that they need to be on-guard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">Although more research is needed, other studies also suggest links between pregnant mothers\u2019 emotions and their children\u2019s mental health. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2013\/12\/131204090956.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">One study<\/a>\u00a0found that pregnant mothers with significant depression gave birth to babies with altered brain structures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\"><b>What This Means for You<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">If you\u2019re pregnant, this may motivate you to talk to the baby in your belly, or even eat lots of vegetables in hopes that your little one will enjoy them down the road!<\/p>\n<p class=\"Body\">The important takeaway for us at BabySparks is this: Knowing that babies are capable of learning in the womb makes it clear that they\u2019re ready to continue learning the moment they leave the womb.
