Overall, it\u2019s important to remember that babies and toddlers can\u2019t manage <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2019\/03\/01\/sleep-regressions-what-they-are-what-to-do\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>sleep loss<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well as adults. If they\u2019re losing just an hour of sleep, it can affect things like their mood, appetite, and ability to focus. Thankfully, there are ways to help little ones adjust and adapt to seasonal time changes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tips for Helping Young Children Adjust\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a few different techniques that can help you prepare your child for the beginning or end of daylight saving time:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Gradually Make the Shift\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/riseandshine.childrensnational.org\/how-to-adjust-your-childs-sleep-schedule\/\"><b>Daniel Lewin<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Ph.D., associate director of sleep medicine at Children&#8217;s National Health System in Washington, D.C, suggests a gradual shift a few nights before the official clock change. For example, let\u2019s say your child has a 7 pm bedtime and you\u2019re preparing to \u201cfall back\u201d an hour. About four days before, begin pushing your child\u2019s bedtime by 15-10 minute increments each night (7:15, 7:30, and so on). This gradual change can help 7 pm still feel like 7 pm after changing the clocks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Stick to Bedtime Routines\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Young children benefit significantly from bedtime <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2020\/01\/23\/the-benefits-of-routines-for-babies-and-toddlers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>routines<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially when daylight saving time rolls around. A clock may tell adults that it\u2019s time to settle down, but bedtime rituals send those same signals to a child. Bringing light into the room can ease them into their morning routine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Keep the Naps\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To help prepare for a time change, parents and caregivers may attempt to shorten, extend, or even cut <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2019\/02\/28\/why-naps-are-a-must-for-babies-and-toddlers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>naps<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> out altogether. However, remember that the goal is to keep the amount of sleep the same while adjusting to the earlier or later hour. Sleep experts recommend keeping the length of the nap the same while gradually adjusting the nap time by 10-15 minute increments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your family\u2019s adjustment to a clock change may be rocky at first, but children typically get back into a rhythm after a week or so.
