And while the experts say that the majority of head injuries in toddlers are minor, these accidents can still rattle parents and caregivers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s take a closer look at why toddlers are prone to head injuries and what the signs of a serious head injury look like.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b><i>Highlights:\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head injuries are more common in toddlers because they\u2019re still learning to master motor skills, their heads are difficult to control, and curiosity to explore can often lead to accidents.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though toddler head injuries are common, parents and caregivers can try to prevent them through things like babyproofing the home and close supervision.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most head injuries can be treated at home with ice packs and band-aids, but some head injuries that are more serious will require a trip to the emergency room.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some signs of a serious head injury include uncontrollable bleeding, vomiting, loss of consciousness, seizures, or bruising around the eyes and ears (see below for a complete list).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head Injuries are More Common in Young Children<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to note how common head injuries are in toddlers when compared to adults. Accidents that lead to those boo-boos and bruises on the head happen more often in toddlers for a few key reasons. As we mentioned in the introduction, toddlers are more likely to experience a fall because they\u2019re still learning to master movements like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2017\/12\/04\/walking-when-why-and-how-babies-start\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>walking<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2020\/01\/23\/the-evolution-of-kicking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b> kicking<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2018\/02\/28\/jumping-a-significant-gross-motor-skill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b> jumping<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In addition, the proportion of their bodies at this stage of development doesn\u2019t exactly work in their favor. Their heads are disproportionately larger than their bodies, which makes them more difficult to control. And since their center of gravity is located more towards their head, it tends to be the body part that endures the most injuries. As toddlers get taller and the muscles in their legs, trunk, and neck develop, head injuries won\u2019t be as common.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though it\u2019s natural for toddlers to frequently bump their heads, it\u2019s still important to do everything possible to try to prevent it. For instance, dangerous areas of the home, such as staircases, should always be secured with babyproof equipment. Helmets should be worn when learning to ride tricycles or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2020\/08\/06\/benefits-of-balance-bikes-for-toddlers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>balance bikes<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When playing at the playground or doing other activities that involve a lot of movement, toddlers need to be supervised. While you can\u2019t avoid <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the falls, taking proper safety precautions can help protect those little noggins.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of Serious Head Injuries<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most toddler head injuries can be treated at home with an ice pack, band-aid, and some extra love and care. However, it\u2019s important to be aware of signs that point to something more serious, like a concussion or a need for stitches. These situations require a trip to the emergency room to make sure that their injuries are treated quickly and with the right medical equipment. Remember that signs of a concussion can appear within 24-48 hours after an accident.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you notice any of these signs or symptoms, call an ambulance or bring your child to the emergency room as soon as possible:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A cut that\u2019s led to uncontrollable bleeding. (Keep in mind that even minor cuts on the head, face, or scalp can bleed heavily because of the many blood vessels close to the surface. But if the bleeding doesn\u2019t stop after attempting to treat it at home, stitches may be necessary.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A loss of consciousness or if they\u2019re unresponsive<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting (more than once after the accident)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble breathing\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood draining from the nose or ears<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A loss of memory\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bruising around the eyes or behind the ears<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seizures<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pupils appear to be different sizes\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive swelling\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soft spot on the skull\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Major changes in their mood or behavior (e.g. more irritable or extreme fatigue)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you don\u2019t see any of these signs, but your parental instinct urges a trip to the ER, it\u2019s perfectly okay to be extra careful and get the reassurance and support you need from a medical professional.
