Babies will also frequently spit up, become gassier, lose sleep, or feel full before they\u2019re finished feeding if they don\u2019t burp. Because babies naturally swallow air while they\u2019re feeding, burping becomes a necessary and routine ritual in the first few months of life. Cupping your hand while patting can be a softer option than a flat, open palm.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gentle pats commonly work well, but softly rubbing your baby\u2019s back or slightly firmer patting can also help them burp.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember that it\u2019s normal for babies to spit up while burping. However, if you\u2019re noticing that their muscles are contracting and the spitting-up looks more like vomiting, be sure to contact your pediatrician. On one leg, their head should be turned to the side, while their tummy rests on your other leg.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure their head is supported and is positioned a little bit higher than their chest.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gently pat your baby\u2019s back with the other hand.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Should You Burp Your Baby?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your burping routine will depend on your baby\u2019s feeding schedule.
