Mindfulness is the act of observing the present without judgment, but its roots go much deeper than that. The practice of mindfulness can be traced back to a number of ancient Asian philosophies, and it\u2019s now become popular in Western culture too \u2013 for good reason. Researchers are finding, again and again, that mindfulness is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">good for us. And, you can start nurturing it in your child early on \u2013 even in toddlerhood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point you might be thinking to yourself: \u201cMy goal is to get my toddler to eat a vegetable, ancient philosophies can come later,\u201d which is a very fair response! Toddlers won\u2019t grasp the meaning behind \u201cbeing present\u201d at this stage. However, you can begin to lay the foundation. Before we get to tips for doing that, let\u2019s explore what mindfulness is.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Mindfulness?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mindfulness is our ability to be present and aware without analysis or judgment. But, what does that really<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mean? Basically, when we\u2019re being mindful, we\u2019re creating distance between ourselves and our thoughts or emotions. We\u2019re allowing our minds and bodies to experience a moment of stillness and peace. It\u2019s important to note that mindfulness is not about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ignoring<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> certain thoughts or emotions, it\u2019s more about learning how to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">control<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> them. Mindfulness can reduce stress, improve mood, and help us regulate our emotions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Executive Functioning and Mindfulness\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists across the globe have concluded that mindfulness practices can boost <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysparks.com\/2017\/06\/16\/what-is-executive-function-how-can-i-nurture-it-in-my-child\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>executive functioning skills<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; the mental processes that allow us to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysparks.com\/2019\/03\/11\/self-regulation-skills-how-to-lay-the-foundation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Self-regulate<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Control our impulses and emotions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focus and prioritize various tasks\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sound decisions\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think critically\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the skills that help children evolve into self-aware and emotionally intelligent adults. But a little bit of mindfulness goes a long way.
