Instead of wearing diapers, babies are held over the potty when it\u2019s time to go. While this diaper-free approach may seem unconventional, it actually has a long history of success.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b><i>Highlights:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elimination communication (EC) involves using timing, signals, cues, and intuition to know when babies need to \u201celiminate waste\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of wearing diapers, parents and caregivers hold babies over the potty.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies show that this method can help babies learn to use the potty at earlier stages.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EC is becoming increasingly popular because it helps to save money on diapers, it\u2019s eco-friendly, and it can prevent diaper rash and urinary tract infections.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Origins of Elimination Communication<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be difficult to wrap your mind around the idea of tossing out the diapers and simply waiting for a \u201csignal\u201d that a poop is on the way. However, when considering the nature and origins of this practice, it starts to make a lot of sense. Ingrid Bauer, who wrote the book <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Diaper-Free-Gentle-Natural-Hygiene\/dp\/0452287774\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><i>Diaper Free! The Gentle Wisdom of Natural Infant Hygiene<\/i><\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and coined the term <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elimination communication<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, traveled throughout India and Africa and observed mothers caring for diaper-less babies who weren\u2019t having any \u201caccidents\u201d. She discovered that mothers in non-industrialized countries and hunter-gatherer cultures were connecting with their baby\u2019s innate rhythms, allowing them to predict when it\u2019s time for their babies to use the potty and guiding them to the appropriate places to relieve themselves before any accidents happened. Bauer also concluded that this approach helped babies learn to use the potty significantly sooner than children in Western society.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While most babies in the United States wear diapers from birth and become fully potty trained around ages 2 or 3, babies in cultures that practice elimination communication begin potty training shortly after they\u2019re born. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2013\/01\/130130082726.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>study<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted in Vietnam of infants trained with the EC method found that these babies began using the potty by 9 months and were fully trained by 2 years. EC is becoming increasingly popular because it helps to save money on diapers, it\u2019s eco-friendly, it prevents diaper rash and urinary tract infections, and most importantly, it helps babies begin using the potty earlier.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Elimination Communication Works<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how does it all work? Here\u2019s a brief overview of the four basic principles of EC:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Timing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Detecting your baby\u2019s natural peeing and pooping rhythms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Signals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Looking for physical signs of when nature calls, such as facial expressions or squirming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Cueing: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communicating a cue with your baby, such as a whistle or a humming sound, while they\u2019re relieving themselves. This is meant to help babies eventually connect the cue with an appropriate time to go potty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Intuition<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Using your instincts to know when it\u2019s poopin\u2019 time!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, like other potty training methods, there are strong supporters and critics of the elimination communication approach. While this practice may work for some, it\u2019s certainly not for everyone. It\u2019s important to find the right method that works for you, your child, and your lifestyle.
