This incredible system is what helps toddlers refine their movements and become more coordinated over time. It also keeps them from getting dangerously dizzy on playground equipment or feeling unsafe when they run, jump, and play.<\/span><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b><i>Highlights:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Balancing steadily develops during the first years of life, and it\u2019s all due to our vestibular system \u2014 our internal sense that\u2019s responsible for balance.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Balance improves as the vestibular system matures. Here\u2019s how this skill develops throughout months 0-36:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">0-12 Months: The vestibular system begins development in the womb. Head control, sitting up, and crawling are achieved.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13-24 Months: Walking becomes more coordinated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25-36 Months: Toddlers can turn, duck, and move in various positions without losing balance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The BabySparks program has activities and resources to support balance and vestibular development.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Does Balance Develop?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Balance improves as the vestibular system matures. You\u2019ll notice your toddler\u2019s balance becomes much better after their second birthday, but their vestibular system and balance have been hard at work long before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>0-12 months<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the moment you give birth to your little one, their vestibular system is already functioning (in fact, it does so while they\u2019re in the womb!).<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any movement that changes their position stimulates and strengthens this system<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means when you\u2019re gently rocking, bouncing, or having a sweet slow dance with your baby, you\u2019re setting them up for healthy vestibular development.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point, your baby\u2019s body is doing most of the balancing work without them putting any thought into it or using their muscles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between age 4-6 months, your infant will gain more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysparks.com\/2017\/03\/28\/head-control-a-building-block-for-movement-feeding-language\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>head control<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, allowing them to use their neck and trunk muscles to balance their head. They\u2019ll begin to sit with your support, and by 8-10 months, have enough balance and strength to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysparks.com\/2017\/04\/24\/crawling-a-key-step-for-sensory-motor-integration-fine-motor-skills-oral-motor-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>start crawling<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. By their first birthday, they may take their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysparks.com\/2017\/12\/04\/walking-when-why-and-how-babies-start\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>first steps<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>13-24 months<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During this stage, you\u2019ll see your toddler moving in all kinds of ways. As they practice walking more without your help, they become more coordinated and feel more confident in their movements. Balance plays a significant role in this. When your toddler turns in a different direction or bends to grab a toy from the floor, their vestibular system and brain work together to help them achieve those movements. By the end of this stage, they\u2019ll feel sturdy enough to stand on one foot without holding onto you for support.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>25-36 months<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout age 2, balance will make a significant growth spurt. They should be able to maintain their balance as they walk or run on different surfaces, like carpeting or a sidewalk. Around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.babysparks.com\/2020\/02\/20\/check-out-my-new-playground-skills-month-32-highlights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>32 months<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, your toddler will be able to turn, duck, and move in various directions without losing balance, making them superstars on the playground. This stage is a perfect time to introduce them to the wonderful world of cycling! Toddlers as young as 30 months can begin to use balance bikes. By 36 months, they can upgrade to tricycles to combine pedaling and steering movements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some babies and toddlers with sensory delays have trouble making sense of what their vestibular system tries to tell them, which can impede balance. If you notice that your toddler frequently seems dizzy or uncomfortable with changing movements, falls often, or appears scared to try to crawl or walk, be sure to bring it up with your pediatrician.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moving is the best way to get your toddler\u2019s balance blooming!
