Talk to your pediatrician before giving your baby medications or supplements to ease teething pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>When Does Teething Start?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your baby was born with a full set of fully-formed baby teeth, nestled below his gums. Most babies\u2019 first teeth appear when they\u2019re between 4 and 6 months old, but the range is wide. Some babies begin teething earlier, and others don\u2019t get a tooth until they\u2019re a year old or older. If you\u2019re concerned about your baby\u2019s teething timeline, check in with your pediatrician or a pediatric dentist.<\/p>\n<p>Baby teeth typically appear in pairs, and in the same order for all children: Bottom two middle teeth, then top two middle teeth, then side and back teeth. By age 2, most children have all 20 baby teeth. The American Dental Association provides a handy <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mouthhealthy.org\/~\/media\/MouthHealthy\/Files\/Kids_Section\/ADAPrimaryToothDev_Eng.pdf?la=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">chart<\/a><\/strong> showing the approximate order and age at which baby teeth appear.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Does Teething Cause Symptoms?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Every baby is different when it comes to teething; some sail through it without issue, others have every symptom possible, and others are somewhere in the middle.<\/p>\n<p>You may notice these symptoms when your little one\u2019s baby teeth are coming through:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Red, swollen, or tender gums.<\/li>\n<li>Excessive drooling.<\/li>\n<li>Pulling on ear. (This may also be due to an ear infection.)<\/li>\n<li>A desire to gnaw or chew.<\/li>\n<li>Fussiness.<\/li>\n<li>Trouble sleeping.<\/li>\n<li>Change in eating behavior. (Nursing, sucking on a bottle, or eating solids may either irritate or soothe his gums. He may want to eat more, or less, while teething.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How Can I Help Soothe Teething Symptoms?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For many babies suffering teething symptoms, pressure and cold help ease discomfort. Here are a few ideas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wet a clean washcloth, put it in a plastic bag, and put the bag in the refrigerator for an hour or so. Take out the washcloth and let your baby chew on it. The texture of the washcloth, along with the cold temperature may help.<\/li>\n<li>Try a teething ring. Dentists tend to recommend solid teething rings that still have a little give. You can put these in the fridge to cool them down, and some even have a textured surface. Liquid-filled models are designed to be frozen, which may damage your baby\u2019s emerging teeth or even leak.<\/li>\n<li>Try gently rubbing a clean finger or the back of a spoon along your baby\u2019s gums.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What About Medication?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-takes-action-against-use-otc-benzocaine-teething-products-due-serious-safety-risk-lack-benefit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FDA advises<\/a><\/strong> that gels containing benzocaine (Baby Orajel, for instance) not be given to children, especially under the age of 2, as they can cause rare but serious side effects. Similarly, the FDA discourages the use of homeopathic teething tablets due to questionable amounts of potentially-dangerous ingredients.<\/p>\n<p>While aspirin can be dangerous for children, infant acetaminophen and infant Ibuprofen are generally considered safe medications to give your baby during teething.
