It\u2019s normal for one 12 month-old to say several words while her 15 month-old peer has just said his first. A child about to turn 2 may be speaking in miniature sentences or just starting to put two words together. You can always check in with your pediatrician or a pediatric speech-language pathologist if you\u2019re worried about your toddler\u2019s speech, or if you notice any of these red flags:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your child acquires a new speech skill, and then loses it.<\/li>\n<li>Your child is well into her 15th month and hasn\u2019t said a recognizable word.<\/li>\n<li>At age 2 your child isn\u2019t beginning to combine words.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b><i>Highlights:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every toddler\u2019s speech develops at a different rate. Check with your pediatrician if you have concerns.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s what to expect from 1-year olds:<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Months 12-16:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First words emerge.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use gestures to communicate.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imitate words, inflection, and tone.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Months 17-20:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speak 10-20 words.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consonant sounds are clearer (p, b, t, k, and g).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Begin combining 2-3 words.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Months 21-24:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Babbling decreases and pronunciation improves. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 24 months, speak 50 words or more.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experiment with pronouns and make common grammar errors. These errors typically disappear by age 4.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Here\u2019s a snapshot of how toddlers\u2019 speech typically evolves from months 12 to 24:<\/p>\n<p><strong>12-16 Months<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Between 12 and 15 months, first words emerge. Your toddler quickly learns that this new way of communicating is efficient, effective, and garners lots of attention! Her vocabulary hasn\u2019t caught up with her excitement and motivation to talk, though, so she may get frustrated if she\u2019s trying to tell you something but doesn\u2019t have the words. The good news is that she has various gestures in her communication repertoire, which help her get her points across. You\u2019ll see her begin to combine words and gestures during this stage, like saying \u201cbye\u201d while waving.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2016\/04\/26\/stick-out-your-tongue-it-is-good-for-your-babys-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Imitation<\/a> is a primary building block of learning, and your little one imitates words she hears, even if she can\u2019t yet pronounce them or understand their meaning. Aside from words, she also copies inflection. She may raise the tone of her voice at the end of a question, for instance. You also hear her practicing intonation when she <a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2017\/07\/03\/the-evolution-of-babbling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">babbles<\/a>, which at this stage sounds like she\u2019s having a full conversation in another language!<\/p>\n<p>Coordinating the lips, tongue and teeth to make consonant sounds takes time to develop, so you\u2019re doing a lot of interpreting and translating. You may have to learn that \u201cat\u201d means \u201ccat,\u201d for example.<\/p>\n<p><strong>17-20 Months<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On average, toddlers speak 10-20 words during this stage and still babble a lot. As your little one\u2019s ability to coordinate her lips, tongue and teeth improves, she begins to make more consonant sounds (including p, b, t, k and g). To appreciate the skill required to form these sounds, try making them while paying attention to how your tongue hits different parts of your mouth and teeth, and notice the subtle difference between making a \u201cp\u201d or a \u201cb\u201d sound.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s realized the power of words by now, and she says them forcefully: \u201cMama!\u201d to get your attention, \u201cMine!\u201d to let you know she\u2019s not happy about you moving her teddy bear, or \u201cNo!\u201d when she <em>does not<\/em> want to eat peas. She also starts to combine two (maybe even three) words together.<\/p>\n<p>Although her speech is steadily becoming clearer, your days of interpreting and translating aren\u2019t over yet. At this stage she may use the same word for several similar things, like \u201cwawa\u201d when she\u2019s talking about water, milk, or juice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>21-24 Months<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Throughout this stage, pronunciation and correct use of words continues to improve, and babbling decreases as your little one adds new words and short phrases at a steady pace. By 24 months, most children speak 50 words or more.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s normal for children to use incorrect grammar at this age, like referring to themselves by name in the third person. They experiment with using personal pronouns (me, you, he, she, etc.), and possessive pronouns (my, your, his, her, etc.), but these are sill complex concepts that your toddler will mix up frequently. Grammar will steadily improve alongside your toddler\u2019s memory.
