It\u2019s helpful to keep in mind that while irrational behaviors can drive you to the brink, they\u2019re 100% normal \u2013 and even a sign of healthy development!<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><em><strong>Highlights:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Irrational behavior in toddlers (like melting down when you give them the &#8220;wrong&#8221; cup) stems from three main things:\n<ul>\n<li>The areas of the brain that process logical thinking are still developing.<\/li>\n<li>They don&#8217;t yet have the tools to manage big emotions.<\/li>\n<li>They&#8217;re beginning to realize that not everyone thinks the same way they do, which can make them feel a loss of control.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Parents and caregivers can handle irrational toddler behavior by remembering the reasons behind it, supporting their little ones with empathy, modeling calm reactions, and staying consistent with limit-setting even when toddlers are testing boundaries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2>What Causes Irrational Behavior in Toddlers?<\/h2>\n<p>The simple answer? Toddlers\u2019 brains are still developing. The areas of the brain that process logical thinking still need time to mature. It is a work already <em>in progress <\/em>though, so with time, guidance (and patience!) you should see more logical thought processes sneak in.<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s more to irrational behavior than a lack of logical thinking. Perhaps one of the most challenging tasks for little ones is that they have a small toolkit for big emotions. They can feel blissfully happy, immensely sad, very angry, and deeply scared\u2026 sometimes all in a short period of time. It\u2019s a roller coaster, and sometimes toddlers act out simply because they feel emotionally overwhelmed and don\u2019t know what else to do.<\/p>\n<p>Another reason for irrational behavior is that your toddler is beginning to develop <a href=\"https:\/\/babysparks.com\/2019\/10\/08\/theory-of-mind-the-foundation-of-relating-to-others\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Theory of Mind<\/strong><\/a>, or the understanding that they have thougths and feelings that are different from others\u2019. Before, they assumed that you were thinking and feeling exactly what they were all the time. So when your toddler starts to realize that you don\u2019t have the same feelings they do about their favorite cup, they might act out because they feel a loss of control.<\/p>\n<h2>Handling Irrational Toddler Behavior<\/h2>\n<p>When your toddler\u2019s reactions seem mind-boggling, these tips can help:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> Be their biggest support:<\/strong> When your toddler\u2019s behavior is disproportionally intense, you may want to roll your eyes (at least on the inside). But it\u2019s important to remember that what they feel is real to them, and showing understanding goes a long way. If your little one is in a full-blown meltdown because you passed the ice cream shop without stopping, you could say: \u201cI know you feel disappointed because we didn\u2019t stop for ice cream. I wish we could, too, but we need to get home for dinner.\u201d This isn\u2019t magic \u2013 it won\u2019t stop meltdowns in their tracks \u2013 but it can help your child feel heard and understood.<\/li>\n<li><strong> Keep your cool:<\/strong> When your toddler acts irrationally, it\u2019s more important than ever to stay calm. When you do, it shows them how <em>you<\/em> deal with stressful situations, and that it\u2019s not necessary to act out.<\/li>\n<li><strong> Stay consistent:<\/strong> Toddlers sometimes act irrationally to push boundaries. As we mentioned, their developing understanding that they have their own thoughts and feelings can spark a desire to convince you to play by their rules.
